Just an idea but how about one of those frapper things for member locations.
Purely on voluntary basis, you understand, but at least you would be able to know whose in your area. I always wanted to know if there were oher members in my neck of the woods but there wasn't a way of finding out, which was a shame.
I had been thinking about something along those lines as well. i don't know how popular it'd be, but it could be a cool feature. Unfortunately I think it's a bit more work to implement with our forum software than with other forum software (such as vBulletin) but I've not looked into it in a great amount of detail.
I'll add it to the to-do list for a long-term possibility...

In the meantime spudgum, you will be able to post up in your appropriate area section for events etc, which will ultimately help area groups get going more.
Maybe start a thread in your nearest area section to see who else is around?
