Nice motor though, all things considered.

Yeh, I think people are putting big prices out there, but they may not necessarily match the sale price.
Saying that, our cars are quickly becoming rare. It's just a shame more people won't get to enjoy them.
Interesting that it looks too be all 1b apart from the engine, makes you wonder if it's original ?
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour
It's the earlier engine alright, but then I've got an E reg with the earlier engine and an E reg with the later one.
whats the difference in the engines?
My brother has a d reg b with an a engine in.
It's whether is has a single or double line from the variable valve unit to the block. A is slightly up on power but b has more top speed.
There's a bit more to it that and I don't agree that the 1a had more power then the 1b, the opposite if anything, the 1a was lighter and mapped differently. other differences from memory
ECU is NOT interchangeable from MK1a to MK1b
MK1a’s ECU is more aggressive for fueling than MK1b.
MAP sensor on a MK1a is square, on a MK1b this is rectangular & NOT interchangeable between the two models.
MK1a have single jet injectors, MK1b have twin jet, higher flowing injectors
MK1a TVIS comes in at a lower RPM than MK1b.
The air intake temp sensor on a MK1a is on the TVIS manifold ( after throttle body ), on a MK1b its on the intake pipe ( before throttle body )
Mk1a have a VTV dashpot under the throttle body acting on the throttle stop, MK1b’s don’t have this.
MK1a has smaller clutch (200mm) MK1b has larger clutch (212mm)
Mine is an early 1b (built Jan 1988) and has the later engine. Personally I think all the cars built in 1988 had the later engine but cars built in 1987 (registered in 88 ) could have either, but that's only based on cars I've seen, haven't seen any definitive proof of that.

I have read that the 1a engines were 130bhp 1b engines 122bhp, I have only ever had 1bs, But I was in one of Garys ( mk1dal) 1a cars it was defiantly quicker.
On the Autocar road test in 13 March 1985 The 0 to 60 time was 7.7 sec true speed, The speedo was recording 65 mph.
The bhp was 121.9.
Bill.
