Hello and Welcome. Not able to offer any advice apart from watch this space as we have some very knowledgeable and extremely helpful people on here. Do you have some pictures?

Tell us more about yourself, what cars have you owned before, if any, and whereabouts are you based?

Hello. Easy jobs first, eh? Blimey, it was years before I summoned the nerve to do a clutch!

If you disconnect the gearchange cables at the gearbox end, you should be able to shift the two arms that they operate, with your hands. IIRC, the upper arm (pivots in a horizontal plane) moves across the gate - i.e. between 1-2, 3-4 and 5-R. Can you feel it doing this? If that seems to be ok, at least the issue is only in the linkages.
There is no adjustment in the cables though that I'm aware of, so I'm guessing that the way you have clipped the cable outers back in at the gearbox end is wrong, keeping the inner extended too much or too little for you to get all the way across the gate.
To get proper access to the shift lever end of things, remove the storage box at the rear of the centre console (four screws, 2 on the side, 2 inside (ignore the two right under the lid)) then the console itself - two screws on each side - at the rear and about 2/3 the way along the armrest (don't lose the plastic washers that spread the load), then two screws hidden beneath the cover for the handbrake mech (these are on a 45 degree angle - your screwdriver needs to be coming up from the driver's footwell at this angle), one screw behind the ashtray (remove the ashtray with care, most have the front hinge of the lid broken), two screws under the felt pad at the very front end of the console and two screws underneath the front end of the console - again approach from the footwells, but pointing straight up. Unscrew the gear knob too before you start to lift the console up and over it, starting at the back end. Reassembly is.....
Let me know what you find

I would check you have clipped the cables in correctly at the gearbox end first and check there isnt something lodged in the gearlever gaiter If it worked before it should work now unless A you've broken something or not put the cables together correctly

Dave, is it possible to get the cables swapped over? Not that I think the result would be the symptoms here. Or would it? The gearlever 'feels sloppy' (in one direction?) but won't move far enough in the other direction? Perhaps you should try swapping the cable ends over at the gearbox! Just to see if each will reach the other crank.

hi thanks for the welcome i did manage to sort the problem out it turns out it was abit omy own fault while changing the clutch i was pulling on the top part of the gearbox lever and slightly moved it so it wasn't in full cantact with the lower one hammer and a screwdriver sorted the problem out quickly

Second best colour (after the Mica Red) if you ask me - don't change it! Rotherham is Opp North int'it? Very active members up there and some extremely helpful ones. No idea where Rotherham is in relation to them though.

I am not a fan of vauxhalls particularly although an ex was trying to restore an Ventura once. However I am partial to a capri. I like the black one and is that a blue one next to the MR2 in the last picture? Might be a Rover SD1 if not but I am struggling otherwise
