AW11 Fast Road / Drift Car

If this thread shouldn't be in this section then please feel free to move it / delete / whatever.

I intend to track the modifications I make to my car and give some sort of feedback as to how it felt on track / what I think will change for the next event etc.

    Car is a 1989 NA.

Complete list of modifications to date:
    New front tyres

Thats it, rest is completely standard, open diff etc etc

Went to Norfolk Arena near king's Lynn, paid £40 and ..

Thanks to http://www.ammophotography.co.uk/ for the first couple,

The rest are stills from a vid my better half took, vid possibly to follow

I was concerned that on the small dusty banger track I wouldn't be able to get sufficient heat into the R888s as you are only on track for about 3-5minutes at a time. However with the fronts at 30psi I found I was melting the tread quite a lot, I have got a picture that has yet to be uploaded showing just how much.

I went up to 70psi in the rear tyres which was okay at the start of the day when the track was still dirty but by late afternoon I could have done with going to 80 or even 90.

Overall I think the car was okay, I worked it very hard for the whole day without giving it any rest periods other than 15 minutes in the que between each session. Between 50 and 60 it was very controllable and I was coming into the corners pretty much sideways just balancing it on the brakes. As the speed dropped off though it would regain traction very suddenly which made it very hardwork. I dont know yet if this is something I will overcome as I improve or if its going to be inherent to the car due to wheelbase and weight location.

My current geometry settings are unknown, the rear ARB is unconnected due to a broken drop link and the steering has a couple of inches of play in it. These are things I will aim to address before the next track day. Oh and I need a bucket seat as I spent half the time trying to brace myself in the car.

Hope this turns into an interesting read / a bit of an insight into "drifting" which most people see as chavs in car parks.

For those interested, I started off with a pair of rear tyres which were below the wear markers and took them down to the wires by about 4:30pm. I then fitted new tyres to drive home on. Therefore I only used tyres that needed to be scrapped anyway oh and half a tank of fuel

Definitely interested in seeing that video, most people say the MR2 (especially an na one!) is underpowered and has the wrong weight distribution for getting the back end out.

How come you're not using an S13 or something like that?

looks like good fun mate! think I've got toomuch mechanical sympathy to do that, sprinted a mk1 last year and struggled to get the back out much on road tyres!
in regards to the bucket seat, I use a CG lock sold by demon tweeks I think, which braces you in really well and fits to the original seat belt, but is only £30-40 as opposed to buying a bucket seat and harness.
    Cheers

I normally have a fair bit of mechanical sympathy but once im on track is out the window . I had a CG lock on my last car and it was great for a month or 2 until it began falling apart carried on patiently putting it back together but one time I lost the little spring so it was game over.

Went to Skegness Stadium this weekend with Norfolk Drift Team and had a blast.

Definitely made another step up from my last time out at Norfolk and just had so much seat time and a track to myself

Grippy track and open diff lead to an early casualty

One tire fire lol had to get the hang of going the other way around to even it out for future laps. All in all I manged to eat 5 tyres this time out.

After last Norfolk day I had to make a very expensive and critical drift modification:

    Anyway enough shite, more pictures:

The above are from Skegness Stadium Drift Day 24/03/2012 - AmmoPhotography so thanks again for those

Had to leave a bit early as engine was struggling with the 7k punishment

As I topped it up, the oil turned to steam :O

shes looking very well mate, got two s13s and track them every now and again and its serious fun but a dear hobby with tyres... Im currently looking at buying one of these and would love to do a track day like yourself in it, how come you dont weld up the diff or get lsd( could be a stupid question as im not sure about mk1 mechanics).

Are you running any hop ups or is it just a standard engine?
