JAPANESE AUTO AND PERFORMANCE CAR SHOW -
THORESBY PARK NOTTINGHAMSHIRE - SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 28th and 29th JUNE 2003
This was the second year that this show has been
held at Thoresby. Saturday was overcast but remained warm and dry, only 5 cars
turned up but as the early bird catches the worm I managed to pick up 2 models
for only £1.50 each. Sunday was very hot and 2 gazebos were just enough. A new
club record for an event outside Billing was set as 18 MR2's came - one from as
far away as Hawick in Scotland and 2 from Norfolk. We found several 'loose'
MR2's around the showground and managed to press gang all but 2 to join us. 'DJ'
- Laurens replacement for 'Yummy' made it's first show appearance and Stuart
Kynoch arrived in his supercharger Karmeleon along with Mark Nias's rare Super
Edition still covered in dust from the club Le Mans trip a couple of weeks
earlier. East Anglia area organiser Stuart Nolloth defended his win from last
year and was awarded runner up in the modified category in spite of some serious
competition.

THORESBY PARK 2003
We enjoyed a fair amount of success in last year’s event and there were several
members who decided to camp over on the Saturday. Unfortunately due to previous
commitments I had to be content with just going up for the day on Sunday. The
journey there was quite uneventful until I got within four miles of the venue
and came across one almighty traffic jam. This was due mainly to road works and
a Sunday market and Antique fair both being held in adjacent venues to our
weekend Japfest. It took over an hour and a quarter to reach the venue and after
a bit of explaining and commenting on the gate was given directions to our
pitch. Brought along second gazebo and with a bit of help it was soon erected
along side to act mainly as a sun shade as the sky was blue all over and
temperatures were well into the twenties.. We had a really good turn out with 18
cars on our pitch and it was heartening to see that members took the trouble to
attend and present their cars no matter what condition they were in. Richard and
others continued to answer technical and maintenance questions that were asked.
(It is very surprising that more people don’t attend this sort of get together
in order to be set on the right lines for particular maintenance problems with
their car). Arriving rather late in the morning I hadn’t time to clean the
‘green’ one but nevertheless entered it into the specials/modified class. My
new cat1 Alarm went off as the cars were being judged and some bright spark told
the commentator over the loudspeaker that a sharp pair of pliers would do the
trick. A little later on I went up to the announcer and told him that my
sophisticated alarm had been set to recognise
someone near with a pair of pliers! That got a bit of a laugh but sadly no prize
– going again to our member Stuart Nollath in his white eurosport kitted MR2.
Chatted to some of the owners of other makes of cars and gleaned quite a bit of
information on interior modifications ( my next project on the ‘green’ one.)
Had a good look around the stalls that were exhibiting and came back for chinwags
with other members on our pitch.
It was for me a very enjoyable show although curtailed somewhat and fortunately the
journey home was much less crowded than the morning’s bottleneck.
