DERBY MOTORSHOW – SUNDAY 7th JULY 2002
This show turned out rather different from the past
two years. Several members could not make it, Doris was in hospital for an
operation, Ken Salmon on holiday in Spain and Lauren Blighton recovering from
her birthday party in London the night before.
Thomas and I followed Sally Fitton from Derby onto the site with only the
prospect of Stuart Kynoch to come. Stuart was on his way from a family wedding
in Ipswich, and wasn’t due until around lunchtime. We consulted the car clubs
area plan and found that the De Lorean club – Thomas is a member – were not down
to attend although they usually do. Sure enough they were soon seen arriving,
and with the two cars' Lotus heritage in mind it seemed appropriate to ask them
to join us on our large pitch. This presumably attracted the Lotus 7 to join the
party, followed shortly afterwards by an AC Cobra. When approached by a member
of the MR2 Drivers Club who’s MK2 was in the public car park, we were only too
happy to invite him to join us for the day.
The event organisers advised us that the Mayor of Derby would be arriving at
the show about 2.30 pm with two guests - the Mayor of Osnabruck and the Mayor of
Toyota City in Japan. Would we like to pose for the newspaper cameraman greeting
the dignitaries in front of our three MR2's - the only Toyota cars on display?
Unfortunately they never arrived.
A chap approached us and asked if anyone was interested in buying a red MR2 a
friend of his had for sale. As it was only a couple of miles up the road, and
Sally is looking for yet another MR2 to rescue, she readily agreed.
