AUTUMN PEAK DISTRICT RUN - SUNDAY 2nd
OCTOBER 2005
Members on the run were:-
Six cars again at the start from Meir Park, I don’t know why six but six it always seems to be not even the same six but
still six! Heading off from the start it was through the winding roads towards
the Moorlands Market town of Cheadle from here it was on through the villages of
Kingsley, Froghall, Foxt, Waterhouses, Warslow then stopping at Longnor for a
tea break. Having travelled through Longnor hundreds of times I must confess
never having stopped, a mistake on my part as the tea shop was lovely and I for
one will be returning. After tea break Fred and Doris took the lead as they wanted to take the
back roads from here up to Axe Edge Pass then on to the Cat and Fiddle for lunch, Its always a job to keep up with Doris’s
spirited driving and today was no exception, though it does make it more
fun! At the top of Axe Edge Fred decided to try an unkown route across to the
Cat and Fiddle, so how we ended up in an old quarry surrounded by trial bikes
is anyones guess, still interesting was one way to describe it. After making an
about turn we headed back up the same road and then down the A537 Cat and
Fiddle road for a lunch stop, here we were joined by David Crawley and passenger
from Yorkshire doing the route in the opposite direction and Margaret? and
passenger who came along for the rest of the drive. Lunch was had with us taking
up one of the pub's bigger tables and with late summer sun beaming in through the
window it made for a very pleasant break. After lunch we said goodbye to David and friend as we headed off down the
twisty bit of the A537 to Macclesfield then looping back on the A57 to the top
of the Cat and Fiddle road always my favourite part of this run with its
winding twisty fun filled tarmac I have not tired of this route over the 25
years I’ve enjoyed it and hope I never will.
At the top of the A537 is Buxton where again Fred and Doris took the
lead as they wanted to drive a very narrow gated road through Pilsbury
(is that where they mine the dough?) and on to Hartington for another tea
stop. After a pleasant stop in Hartington with the ladies doing some shopping
the having tea most folk decided this was a good point to head for home as there
were three main directions for people to go, so another successful (I think so
and no one disagreed) Peak district run came to an end. Same again in the spring
only different!
