JAPANESE AUTO EXTRAVAGANZA - EAST OF
ENGLAND SHOWGROUND, PETERBOROUGH, CAMBRIDGESHIRE SATURDAY and SUNDAY 23rd and
24th JULY 2005
JAE 2005 with its new venue at the East of England Show
Ground in Peterborough is now a memory for all who attended. The show was a
great success apart from a couple incidents on Friday and Saturday evening which
did tarnish the event for an unfortunate few.
Preparation for the show started early in March with a meeting at the venue
with the event organisers, there were two more meetings the last one at which we
were able to secure a very good pitch for the event, no lack of space on this
occasion.
By 11am on Friday 22nd July the club flag was raised for all to see and the
banner in position all ready for the first arrivals of the day who would be
camping on the Friday night. Around 7pm we had 21 cars all set up with their
tents. One of the MR2s arrived towing a caravan - a very rare sight, that was
Mac and Jacqui Sheavills, Mac has a thing about towing with a MK1, last year it
was a trailer tent, what will it be next year? Watch this space.
Feeding the campers was the next priority, Doris's beef and chicken curry
early in the evening went down well as usual and after a few drinks Rachael
Morgan’s spaghetti bolognaise rounded the evening off, no pub to go to at this
event, we could see a Harvester on the other side of the security fence but to
get there would have been like breaking out of a high security prison.
Saturday morning was a little dull but happy to say no rain during the day.
Gazebos were set up at the front of the pitch and the cars arranged behind with
Stuart Kynoch’s expertise; in total we had 45 cars on the stand by the end of
the day. Three members; Joanne Walker, Alison Goodfield and Damon Herring
entered the JAE ‘Show and Shine’ competition, it was a good experience the event
being won by a superb Supra. There was a steady flow of visitors but generally
not as busy as the Billing venue.
Saturday evening was a good social gathering with barbecues burning and the
smell of good food drifting through the camping complex.
During Saturday there was a football match challenge between IMOC and the MK1
Club organised by 12 year old Christopher Kynoch, son of chairman Stuart. A
great deal of energy was expelled, the satisfying result being 2 all.
Sunday morning dawned quite dull but at this stage dry. Breakfast over the
business of setting the stand up for the day was started. I decided that with
the space available we could arrange the cars in a circle with a centre group,
by lunch time we had a full circle as you can see from the pictures on the web
site. Judging for the various classes started around 12 o’clock as sadly so did
the rain. We did look a sorry lot with umbrellas and rain proofs but it didn’t
dampen the enthusiasm for the event. We had a grand total of 54 MK1s plus three
members without their cars - with their MK1s we would have beaten the attendance
record for vehicles by one, we did with members.
There were nine trophies to be won, a group of judges were appointed and
after a very difficult exercise in pouring rain 9 winners were chosen.
The winners were:- Congratulations to you all, also a big thanks you to everyone who attended
the event and in being so patient whilst the judging and prize giving took place
on Sunday in the pouring rain. See you all again next year.
