TRANSPARENT ROOF SPOILER
It appears
that the roof spoiler is attached to the car in two different ways, on my B,C
and E reg cars it is held only by two screws as detailed below, but several
members have reported that on their cars it is fixed by a large number of bolts
that pass through the body and are very difficult to gain access to as it is
necessary to remove the interior roof trim.
Undo the
larger of the four screws that pass through the roof spoiler and the side
fillets, an assistant will be necessary at this stage. With both screws removed
the spoiler can be bent slightly and taken off, it rests on four clips as shown
in the diagram and easily lifts off them. When this is done the three remaining
smaller screws can be removed and the two side fillets taken off, this gives
access to areas around the rear screen sealing rubber and bodywork which are
normally covered with green gunge and dried on car polish. The buttress air vent
simply unclips to reveal dried mud and mummified flies etc.
Granville
Williams the racing car driver says that the car handles noticeably better
without the spoiler as its removal seems to allow better airflow over the roof
to the boot spoiler. I think that a lot of people have long suspected that the
roof spoiler is no more than a clever permanent advertisement with the word TOYOTA
written large for all to see. I intended to try running the car at the Castle
Combe track day but did not have time to do it , incidentally at Castle Combe we
saw a red car with a large formula 1 type adjustable boot spoiler which was
mounted about a foot above the position of the boot lid, but were not able to
quiz the owner. This car also sported a very deep and low front spoiler with
only 2” or so ground clearance.
