CAMBER ANGLE FINDER
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING AND USING A CAMBER ANGLE FINDER
This camber angle finder/gauge is based on an angle finder which may be purchased
at B&Q or Machine Mart for around £8. With a few simple modifications and a
spirit level it can be used to check and set the camber angle on certain cars
where it is possible to adjust the camber angle, including Toyota MR2s, and
Corollas.
Picture 1 shows the angle finder/gauge with the necessary fittings attatched. A small normal spirit level may be
used, but it is more convenient to stick one to the gauge, as has been done in
the illustration.
Picture 2 shows the gauge in use to check the camber angle without removing the wheel. The
car needs to he on level ground and the wheels in the straight ahead position.
The top bar rests on the top centre of the tyre while the lugs locate on the rim.
The spirit level should be levelled and will then give a reading of the camber angle
in degrees.
Picture 3 shows the gauge hanging on the wheel to show how it fits against the wheel rim.
Picture 4. With the car jacked up and the suspension hanging, the wheel is removed and the
gauge is bolted to the wheel hub. Take a new reading with the spirit level, noting
the new degrees. If the angle needs to be altered, change the angle mark to the
degree you require and use the adjuster on the car to return the spirit level
to level.
Pictures 5, 6 and 7 show the components that need to be made to modify the angle finder for
this purpose. With careful use, it is possible to set an angle accurately to ¼ of
a degree.
NB The tracking may need re-setting following an adjustment to the camber angle.
