100KPH CHIME REMOVAL - JAPANESE DOMESTIC MR2's
Remove
the screws holding the cowling above the main instrument cluster, carefully pull
out the speedo/tachometer assembly. (you can see it looking through the
windscreen from outside the car). The chimer module is a small metal box about
about one and a half inches by one inch, and is attached to the printed circuit
board on the back. Simply unscrew the terminals attached to the wires coming out
of it and pull it off. I chose to keep mine but run the wires to a switch so I
could give passengers the dubious pleasure of it going off. If you have never
experienced it, it certainly does the job it was intended to do. It is nigh on
impossible to suffer it by driving above 100 kph – 65mph.
Another approach is to take out the instrument panel by removing the cowl, then the
metal bracket underneath. A workshop manual is a help. The hardest part is
removing and re-installing the speedo cable as there is no slack in the cable.
Look through the windscreen while working behind the instruments, or use a
mirror. With all the screws undone and cables disconnected, pull out the
instrument panel. You should see a little metal box screwed to the back of the
cluster on the PCB which reads: "CHIME / TOYOTA" (possibly two yellow wires).
Then unscrew it and take it off. It can be done without removing the speedo
cable, but you need small hands and a short screwdriver.
