ECU PICS TO ACCOMPANY MARCH 2005 MAGAZINE

Lifting the Lid on the AW11 ECU Part 6

In this part I will describe my programmable modules for the MK1 MR2. I’ll also show the results of my first attempt at remapping the 17030 MK1A ECU! The UK MK1 MR2 ECU contains an 8 bit microcontroller chip which is clocked at 4MHz and it has 4kb of masked ROM (Read Only Memory) within the chip. This ROM holds all the program code for the ECU and also all of the maps. Because the ROM is mask programmed deep within the microchip, many people have assumed that the ROM is ‘unreachable’. This is not true!

I’m not yet sure what will be in part 7. I’m having a sideways look at the JDM MK1 SC ECU so maybe I’ll have something to report on that. I’ve also managed to get hold of the ‘other’ type of MK1B ECU the 89661-17070. It has some features of the 17030 MK1A ECU and some of the 17140 MK1B. It also has some rather odd things hidden in its ROM code that could spark some debate!

Cheers!
