View Full Version : TdF in the Dales - Yorkshire Run Sept 17th 2017

We did this route for the first time last year and it seemed to go down well. It follows the route of the Tour de France when it was in Yorkshire in 2014. Here's a link to last year's thread:http://www.mr2mk1club.com/showthread.php?17604-TdF-in-the-Dales-Yorkshire-Run-Sept-25th

This year I intend doing the same route with the addition of a slight detour as recommended by Graham (LakeLad).

The meeting point is the carpark of the Tesco Superstore in Skipton:

Craven St
Skipton
North Yorkshire
BD23 2AG
England

There is a petrol station at this store so you can fuel up.

We need to leave Tesco at 10:00am and head north to Grassington for the start of the run. My expectation is that we will be back in Skipton around 4:00pm. We will stop in Reeth for lunch for an hour. We found a nice butty shop there last year and parked our cars on the green in the middle of the village.

You can download a map and route instructions here: http://www.cyclethedales.org.uk/routes/day-rides/tour-de-france-du-dales/TDF-map-and-description.pdf

This link tells you more about the route: http://www.cyclethedales.org.uk/tour-de-france-in-the-dales/the-route

Please add me. Gosh I will have to think hard about the extra addition (nearly 50 and the memory is not as good as it used to be).

I'm pretty sure I drew it on my map, but I'm not 100% as I'm nearly 50 and my memory is not as good as it used to be (I'm sure I've heard that somewhere before!). ;)

Hi Anthony,

Please put us down, we will come in both cars if you have enough places but will definitely be there in one if not.

Yes, now a two Mk1 family! :D

My name seems to have disappeared off the list and I am still coming. Have I been struck off for being a non-runner at Tatton!

It might be a struggle for me to get there on Sunday. Some inconsiderate person at work has gone on sick with "stress" so I may need to cover and cancel my time off.... But I'll try my best to make it

Well that was quite a day. I got to Tesco and Bill and Mike were already there, but in 1 car rather than a car each. There had been other cancellations so it was already looking like a select few cars. Don and Pam arrived in their lovely red original mk1 for their first ever run with the club. I was surprised that Martin hadn't turned up, particularly as he'd joined me on the practice run a couple of weeks ago. I rang him and he'd got the date wrong, thinking the run was next week! So it was just the 3 cars that headed up to Grassington.
We couldn't go into the car park as there was a 1940's festival in town. The Marshall allowed us in for a few minutes and I took some pics.

Then I got a text from Martin saying he'd meet us at Grassington. 5 minutes later he was there! We were up to 4 cars!!

We set off and the first section was rather slow due to traffic, but after our first stop we had some good clear sections so could press on a bit.

Stopped for some pictures on the 'Graham Loop'.

Then it was up into the hills and down to the ford...

Martin tried to soak me!
http://www.mr2mk1club.com/images/imported/2017/09/a82e87777719bea39f9ca1ae5947b99c-1.jpg

Down to Reeth where we stopped for lunch and a couple of passing lads were impressed to see 4 'Porsches' lined up!

We were then surprised to see a silver & white mk1 drive past. He turned round and joined us. His car was very familiar looking....

Alan, the driver stopped for a good chat. Were we about to go up to 5 cars? Why was Alan's car so familiar? Unfortunately Alan had to get home and was just passing through Reeth, so we were back to 4. His car was familiar to anyone with this book:

Overall, a very enjoyable day. The weather was great, although it chucked it down on my way home. I'm so glad that Don & Pam came along. I think the pace took them by surprise at first, but Don tells me he enjoyed it. I hope to see you on more runs next year.

Those who dropped out all missed a cracker!

Sorry not to make it today. I had to spend my day at my desk. I don't normally work my day off but today it was important For a number of reasons but I am really sorry I missed the fun. Good to see you found the water splash! It is the one that featured in the opening titles of "All Creatures Great and Small" which those of us older than Martin will remember!

That's great to hear. I was a bit concerned as the pace was pretty quick. I know if my wife was with me I'd have been getting a right ear-bashing! Keep an eye on the forum for next years dates.
