View Full Version : Woodsport Rivet on wide arch kit

Woodsport

Hi guys, i made this set of "rivet on" arches a few years ago as a one off for a customer with a 2gr Mk1, only now they are being molded so that they can be sold in numbers.

This wide arch set bolts straight on and is extremely well fitting, 3" wider at the rear and 1" wider at the front per side.

The final product will not be ready for about 4-5 weeks so bear with me, but as per usual will be our normal high quality product.

Pics of the original arches below....

Potentially paul but it depends on a number of things.
I am thinking about doing this as a temporary think for a couple of years until I have the car restored.
I assume nothing ireversible has to happen?

Cheers

Chrys

Some drill holes in the original panel, nothing that can't be fixed

They are designed to fit with side skirts arent they?

The problem i have is that when the rear arches were done for the previous owner, they replaced them with metal but fabricated the sections themselves. This meant when i tried to fit side skirts before, they did not fit where the spats are. The shape is not correct. This is part of what i want fixed when i have the car restored.

I have new wings for the front even though the ones on are great. So i am not too worried about drilling holes.

The matching to a side skirt may be the issue for me unfortunately.

I think you could fit them without the skirts Chrys! Would be awesome!:)

These are designed to work with the skirts so I'm not sure on that one...

Yes any wide arch is going to mean either new wheels or spacers.

Scotty
19th July 2014, 07:48 AM
Out of interest, what offset/width would be needed to fill the rears?

Woodsport
19th July 2014, 07:55 AM
The rears are about 3" wider than stock, the front about 1"

Scotty
19th July 2014, 08:03 AM
so would that require a higher or lower offset (always get confused with that)

gonae86
19th July 2014, 08:12 AM
Lower... possibly negative offset

Interested, depending on price won't be until later in the year though, plenty of other things to fix first.

Any news on these Paul?

Woodsport
18th August 2014, 05:20 PM
Yes, i have the first set of splash molded copies now, fitment is quite good, but will vary from car to car due to sideskirt position/angle and wheel arch contours (many on their 2nd set of arches) but overall i just need to make a few adjustments before the master molds are cast....

They look good though...

Woodsport

Still a good few weeks off yet mate, i have to do final prep to the splash molds then my molder has to make the final molds, i hope to have them ready for sale by end of September at the latest, i have presold over 15 sets to the US market already.

Hell yes, get my name down for a set of these please Paul! you won't regret fitting wide arches mate, I think it's the best upgrade visually you can do to the AW11, it gives the car the presence that it's missing as standard! Mike

Fozzy

I've been set on making it wider, it'll need it once I drop the tubby engine in, it'll need as much rubber as I can get under the arches! I've asked a few times about these arches, I've wanted them since I first saw pictures of Paul's expert work creating them.

Woodsport

They are definitely coming, just making final adjustments to them to get the fit as close as possible.

Awesome! What sort of width wheels would be needed to fill these out? I was looking at 8.5 rears and 7.5 fronts, or is there more to it than that?

Woodsport
18th October 2015, 07:08 PM
Offset needs to be taken into consideration so more to it than that I'm afraid

Well the originals which are still on the silver car I've fitted 9.5 and 10 plus 11 all depends on the et of your wheels, I've used bolt on spacers of 20mm and 25mm front and rear.

Best to fit the arches then look for wheels that are deep dished or has the correct mr2 et but I think it's 2inch from mounting face to hitting the shock Spring seat and 7 to 8 inch to the arch, also size 16/17 wheels and your choice of tyres are another factor as I had to move one set of wheels further out on 17inch alloys and 40 height tyres as they rubbed on the lower Spring platform, the coilovers sorted this and I could then fit wider rubber, a lot of trial and error.

Fronts I wouldn't go wider than 7.5 and remove or grind down the nut that holds the inner arch liner as every wheel tyre size combo I've tried hits the rubber on full lock both sides, same info as the rears really, another tip is to check what ever wheels you buy clears the calipers and discs as the st205 brakes some 16 inch designs hit the calipers standard brakes should be fine but most modern wheel makers only make wheels these days in 17 and up sizes in the et you may need , I've found those that will make wheels to a custom offset and Pcd cost twice as much.

So finally these are ready for sale....

This is the first set of flares very quickly fitted to a car we have here, they are not bolted on properly and have not been trimmed anywhere, but i have to say the fit is pretty good.

Obviously this cars wheels are not wide enough to fill these out, but you get the idea.

There is always going to be a slight fitment issue from one car to another, i cannot stress that point enough, so for a perfect flush fit some light sanding may or may not be needed, but i am very happy that the first fit is very close, certainly with a rubber gasket or trim between the flare and bodywork there would be nothing at all.

I am happy to start taking confirmed orders, i can get better pics from more specific areas if you request them too.

They look great! I'm out the country atm, I need to look at what wheels I can get that will fill these first. Don't want to go bigger than 15" so I will have to look at what is available. Are your BC replica front lips still available? As I think that will be a more sensible option to go for first when I'm back.

This car is fast becoming a demonstrator for my products! Looks fantastic sir.

I haven't made a final decision on selling these arches yet, all fibreglass products require a little sanding/trimming etc but some customers don't understand that, as such i had a few "complaints" in the USA about fitment even though they all come from the same mold there will always be a slight discrepancy from car to car.

It makes it very hard for me to advertise them as fitting perfectly even though i know the fitment is very good.

I do all of my bodywork products as a sideline, no real profit in any of it, just to keep aftermarket parts alive for these cars, the big players aren't interested in the Mk1 Mr2 anymore, it's a very niche market with not many cars around now, so it makes it difficult for me to keep motivated making products if i get fitment moans.

I'll be honest, i think some people want zero prep, in this day and age it's all about out of the box, bolt on, go.

That is just never going to happen with a fibreglass product.

Sorry for the rant!

AW11mike

If people who don't understand that custom bodywork always need a little work ,shouldn't be touching body work on cars.

adamstanford
13th March 2016, 11:20 AM
Your car looks sweet Scotty real mean looking.

I thought Americans love hacking things to bits and custom work etc. I'd be a bit less surprised if we brits moan. To be fair it does clearly state in the ads that some light modification may be required to fit. If I didnt wanna cut it myself and it was going as a bolt on job it could easily be hidden with a bit of weatherstrip. However fibreglass is relatively easy to cut and it's as easy as it's gonna get.

And i'm out.

You have had more than enough from me for a car that was sold with no warranty in a private sale, i have bent over backwards to help you despite your abusive comments, your fraudulent Paypal claim, calling me names, blaming me for a leaking heater matrix 2 bloody months after buying the car that i may add i did not build! Your constant harrasment by phone, texts, emails, hounding me on forums, i've done everything in my power to help you with something that i have no duty of care to do so with.

You bought a car from me in a private sale, nothing to do with my business, you bought 4 items from my business totalling £650 that were supposed to be several hundred pounds dearer than that, i have sent you a free heater matrix and a free turbo, free clear side repeaters, free clear indicator lenses, HT leads, answered your calls at all times of night and day, i have gone above and beyond helping you.

The final straw was making a fraudulent £500 paypal claim against me, calling me a "mother fucker" in the resolution centre comments, claiming the items i sent you were all damaged. Paypal took the money from me, froze my account pending investigation, which stopped me using it for my business parcel deliveries etc......

I have totally had enough. do what you will.
