Hi all,

We’re pleased to announce the availability of tickets to this year's Silverstone Classic!

For the second year running, this has been chosen as the Club Event of the Year, as we think it encompasses an excellent car show, alongside a phenomenal array of priceless race cars thrashing around Britain’s foremost race circuit. Furthermore, the pits are fully open, so you can really get a feel for what goes on in-between and during the races.

We have a plot of 25 cars available to us, with the possibility of expansion if necessary. This really is a world class car show with one of Europe’s largest outdoor classic and sports car displays. It’s a fantastic way to meet new members and fellow enthusiasts and also experience some real motorsport.

Check out an example of the race grids involved over the 3 days!

National Paddock:

Historic Formula Juniors (Pre '64)
Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre '61 Sports Cars
Classic Formula 3 ('71-'84)
Under 2 Litre Touring Cars (U2TC)
Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars (Pre '63 GT)
Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre '56 Sports Cars

International Paddock:

FIA Masters Historic Formula One ('66-'85)
Mustang Celebration Trophy (Pre '66)
Chopard International Trophy For Pre '66 GT Cars
The Super Touring Car Trophy ('70-'99)
HGPCA Pre '66 Grand Prix Cars
HGPCA Pre '61 Grand Prix Cars
FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars ('62-'74)
Group C Endurance

In some cases, we're talking about grids of cars worth millions of pounds each, being driven to their limits!

Alongside the car show and the racing from 9am until 9pm, there is so much else to get involved in. There are also live concerts on the Friday and Saturday nights. Previous acts have included The Hollies, Stars From The Commitments, Adam Ant, Mike and the Mechanics, Suzi Quattro, 10CC, Wishbone Ash, The Yardbirds, Dr Feelgood, Santana, The Pussycat Dolls, plus plenty of tribute bands to some of rock’s greatest bands.

There were several people that attended last year for the first time and it was beyond their expectations!

As a car club, we have been offered a great ticket promotion that gives us 2 for the price of 1! Please see the breakdown of the various ticket options below:

(two tickets)
Until 31st March 2014
1st April – 31st May 2014

Friday
£39
£45

Saturday
£60
£65

Sunday
£55
£60

2 Day Fri/Sat
£70
£80

2 Day Sat/Sun
£80
£90

3 Day Fri/Sat/Sun
£95
£110

** Remember, the above prices are for 2 tickets **

There will also be a £3 charge per booking (not per ticket) to cover administrative charges of both Silverstone and postage costs to ourselves. eg. 1 x 3 day ticket = £98 or 2 x Sunday only ticket = £113. This has increased a little bit from last year, but they’ve basically included the previous administration charges into the ticket price.

Of course, you’ll get best value if you book with us before the end of March.

The best way (in my opinion) to make a proper weekend of this event is to camp at the Woodlands campsite. This way you’re on-site for the whole weekend and can really enjoy the show even more! It’s good to have a base and we always have a fun time socialising in the evenings, discussing all things Mk1!

Details of the camping can be found below:

The campsite will be open from 7am on Thursday 24th July until 12 noon on Monday 28th July and tickets are valid for the whole period.

• Adult weekend camping - £49 p.p.
• Child (6-16) weekend camping - £16.50 p.p.
• Child (5 and under) weekend camping – Free
• Weekend Electrical Hookup - £64.50

Pricing is per person and all vehicle types are welcome, including cars, campervans and motorhomes. Whilst there is no formal restriction on pitch size, please keep your pitch to a reasonable size to ensure there is enough room for everybody. Those booking a Weekend Electrical Hookup will be given an approx. 8m x 8m pitch size, and there is a dedicated area for larger motorhomes.

A few of us will be there from the Thursday night, so please don’t be worried about camping alone. The facilities are excellent and the cars that park up in the campsite begger belief at times! Being woken up to the sound of V8 drag cars, Ferraris, TVR’s and lots of various classics is something special indeed.

For those not wanting to camp, there are a couple of regular Mk1 club attendees that stay in a B&B locally, which is priced at £35 per person per night.

You can see information and pictures from previous years’ events from the below links:

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/showthread.php?14815-National-Event-of-The-Year-The-Silverstone-Classic-26th-to-28th-July-2013

To book tickets, you’ll need to be a paid member of the Mk1 Club, which if you are, you should be able to access the payment details from the following link:

http://www.mr2mk1club.com/showthread.php?15840-Silverstone-Classic-%96-25th-to-27th-July-2014-%96-Club-Event-of-the-Year&p=157063#post157063

If you’re not currently a paid member, it only costs £10 per year and you get a lot more access on the forum along with free entry to a lot of events and 2 for 1 offers like at Silverstone. You can upgrade via the below link:

Additional information can also be found on the official Silverstone website below:

Let’s make it a great show with a fantastic showing of Mk1’s!

Put me in Tom please , it was my first time at the show last year and it blew my mind it was fabulous and 150 pounds for 3 days including camping is nothing for the quality of this event a true petrol head dream . The woodlands camp site was brilliant with top shower blocks ,toilets and washing up facilities for easy camping . There is even a tractor tram to take you to the track gate free of charge using the tram stops around the camp site , we used these at night to watch the racing and shows so we could have a few beers , it was brilliant fun . i do highly recommend this weekend get your tents out show your car ( it doesn't need to be concourse at all ) meet your fellow members and have lots of fun . ps tom i have booked the day off work to help set up the stand on the Thursday .

As Anthony says, remember that all the prices in the table are for two tickets due to the 2 for 1 offer that the club receives. You must book using the instructions on the thread below to ensure that you get this offer:

Music line-up announced! Hopefully we can make it to see them this year!

Two great names from rock and pop history – Canned Heat and Bonnie Tyler – will headline the live music bill at this year’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July).

Formed nearly 50 years ago in California, Canned Heat remains one of the world’s most famous boogie rock groups – and a timeless band that never fails to deliver.

The blues based American outfit was one of the stars of the legendary Woodstock festival at the height of the hippie era and songs such as ‘Going up the Country’ and ‘On the Road Again’ remain rock classics to this day. Though founder members Bob Hite and Alan Wilson have passed away, two of the surviving members from the Woodstock era – bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Fito de la Parra – are still rolling back the years and continuing to wow audiences around the globe.

Friday evening’s bill topping performance at the Silverstone Classic will be the band’s only UK appearance in 2014 and comes as the finale to a busy European tour that includes dates in Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. This is a rare UK appearance for Canned Heat as the band hasn't toured in the UK for more than a decade.

Then on Saturday the live music stage sees Bonnie Tyler topping the line-up. Often referred to as the ‘International First Lady of Rock’, Tyler shot to prominence in the late Seventies and early Eighties with a string of hit singles including: ‘Lost in France’; ‘More than a Lover’; ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and ‘Holding Out for a Hero’. Since then her distinctive, husky voice has featured on numerous albums and singles and last year her song ‘Believe in Me’ was the UK’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Silverstone Classic festival goers will also be treated to a host of other familiar favourites from three top tribute bands. Aerosmith Big Ones and the Ultimate Eagles will be performing with Canned Heat on Friday while Bonnie Tyler will be supported by Signed Sealed and Delivered: A Motown Revue. Performing soul classics by idols such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and Michael Jackson, their Motown music set will amplify the special 50-year celebrations for the iconic Ford Mustang. Rising stars Mo Evans and the Jim Stapley band are also on Saturday’s live music bill.

“It’s shaping up to be another huge ‘Rocking and Racing’ summer for the Silverstone Classic,” admitted Nick Wigley, event director. “There will be more bumper grids of historic racing cars and we’ve already had a record number of car clubs signing up for displays. But while the cars will always be the stars, live music has always been a key part of the family entertainment on offer, notably for those staying at Silverstone for the entire festival weekend. We’ve had some great bands performing in recent years and I’m thrilled that we can now add the names of Canned Heat and Bonnie Tyler to those of Adam Ant, Mike & the Mechanics, Santana, Suzi Quatro, the Hollies, 10cc and the Yardbirds.”

It should be a lot of fun! :D

Evenin' all,

Before you all settle down to watch Eurovision (!) can anyone of the experienced crew advise what is needed when placing your motor on the stand please?

For example, if we are 'showing off' our vehicles, are we expected to produce some sort of laminated data sheet for our vehicles which is fixed to a post alongside?

I just thought I'd ask as I've honestly not done this kind of thing before and wanted to prepare for the big day.

BTW, watch for the dodgy points being given by the Eastern countries to their neighbours!

If you have not received your tickets in the post, please check the status of your order by going to http://www.seetickets.com/CustomerService. ** UPDATE **

SIR STIRLING MOSS BACK IN THE HOT SEAT

• Racing legend to lead both Maserati and record GP cars parade
• Famous 250F to front special celebrations on Super Sunday

Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss OBE will be back behind the wheel of one of his favourite grand prix cars to lead both record F1 and Maserati centenary parades at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (25-27 July).

The world’s biggest ever F1 parade will mark 50 grands prix at Silverstone – a major milestone that will be reached in July. Maserati is the award-winning event’s official ‘Celebration Marque’ for 2014 and will be celebrating its first 100 years with a special cavalcade of its finest road and competition cars.

Both special commemorative parades will take place on the full Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on ‘Super Sunday’ 27 July and, appropriately, both will be fronted by Moss driving a Maserati 250F.

Hailed as one of the greatest grand prix cars ever created, the 250F was pivotal in Moss’ early F1 career. He raced one to his maiden grand prix podium at the superfast Spa-Francorchamps circuit in 1954, and in 1956 won at both Monaco and Monza when competing for the Maserati factory team.

“It will be very, very special to lead both the wonderful parades in a 250F,” enthused Moss, now aged 84. “The Maserati is probably the most beautiful looking and user-friendly Formula One car ever built; it’s delightful to drive and a real collector’s item. It was also very important to me. Not many people know this, but my father went to see Mercedes in 1953 to ask Alfred Neubauer [the team’s legendary F1 team manager] to give me a drive. He said that he’d been impressed by my driving in crappy cars but wanted to see me in something that could win. So we bought the Maserati. My first race was the Swiss Grand Prix at the tricky Bremgarten circuit and, in the wet, I put the Maserati on pole in front of [Juan-Manuel] Fangio, [Alberto] Ascari and all the Mercedes! As I said, it was a fantastic car to drive.”

The Maserati 250F that Moss will be driving at Silverstone is the chassis originally raced by Roy Salvadori back in the fifties and is one of just 26 ever produced. In total, the 250F won eight grands prix and was instrumental not only in establishing Moss as one of Britain’s top sporting stars but also in the great Fangio winning world championship titles in both 1954 and 1957.

“It’s always wonderful when things fall into place so perfectly,” enthused Event Director, Nick Wigley. “To have Sir Stirling Moss – the only British driver ever to win a grand prix in a Maserati – leading both parades in a magical 250F is just the best possible scenario. Even in our wildest dreams, we couldn’t have hoped for a finer sight.”

Mouth-watering new grid for racing supercars
Eye-catching line up of Ferrari F40s, Jaguar XJ220s and McLaren F1s

A stunning new grid of racing supercars from the nineties is the latest addition to the incredible on-track action at this summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic (25-27 July).

The inaugural 90s GT Legends line up stars a mouthwatering field, topped by Ferrari F40s, Jaguar XJ220s, Lister Storms, Porsche GT1s plus no fewer than five fabulous McLaren F1 GTRs including at least one of the ten ‘Longtail’ versions, each valued at more than £3m.

These on-track icons celebrate the era from 1994 to 2000 when production-based GT cars once again ruled the endurance racing world. This welcome resurgence followed the demise of the Group C prototypes and harked back to bygone epochs when sportscar racing was dominated by exotic street machines rather than purpose-built specials.

Although relatively short, the period saw a vast array of cars compete, ranging from specialist small-volume production sportscars such as Ascari, Lotus and Venturi to factory programmes from McLaren, Porsche and Mercedes… and even the odd hypercar such as the Bugatti EB110 and XJ220.

Initially this new breed of GTs found a playground thanks to the emergence of the BPR Global GT Series, which enjoyed tremendous popularity between 1994 and 1996. The premise of its success was that teams could field competitive production-based cars on relatively low budgets. Underlining their competitiveness, McLaren also won Le Mans in 1995 – the first time a showroom model had won the famous 24 Hour showdown for more than 25 years.

Such was the escalating interest in this latest generation of racing supercars that by 1997 the FIA had created a GT1/GT2 World Championship and with it came a new breed of even faster ‘homolgation specials’ taking advantage of regulations that only required a small production run of 25 similar road cars to be built. These included the Porsche GT1, Panoz Esperante and Mercedes CLK-LM.

The spectacular power show at the Silverstone Classic is expected to attract around 40 of these awesome GTs – the largest number seen in action since their heydays. Ensuring no one misses out, they will be providing dramatic flat-out demonstration sessions on all-three days.

“We are always looking to broaden the Classic’s appeal and the introduction of these 90s GT Legends certainly does that in fantastic style,” enthused Event Director, Nick Wigley. “A few years ago we launched races for Super Tourers – an initiative which since then has really taken off. Now we are hoping to do the same with these sensational racing supercars from the same period. The sights and sounds of fabulous McLarens, Ferraris and Jaguars all at full chat on the fast Silverstone Grand Prix circuit is something no one will want to miss.”

I can't wait for this!!! :D

Hi all,

Another update on the tickets!

Firstly, Bill had received his already as the organiser's tickets got sent through ahead of the normal ones.

Everyone else's tickets were despatched yesterday to Ken, so hopefully he should have them to post out to you all by the weekend. Neither him or me are particularly happy with the way the tickets have been handled this year, but I guess that just goes to show that outsourcing isn't always the best way!

I wouldn't worry about the tickets not arriving, and even IF they didn't, we have booking confirmation codes for everyone, so there will be no issues at all.

It's shaping up to be an amazing show!

Just 7 more get ups for those that are going on the Thursday! Rock on! :D

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any additional queries.

Cheers,
Tom

I have been organising the 2 Tatton Park shows for years now, I only get the tickets about a week before the Shows, But I have to apply for the tickets 6 weeks
before the Shows, this seem to be the norm.

The Silverstone tickets are normally received in the first week of July, but as previously stated, due to the company that prints the infield car passes dragging their feet, there was a delay in getting them out to customers (who then have to send them on to their club members). It doesn't help that it's the Silverstone GP just 3 weeks before the Classic too! :)

Hi Howard, sorry we missed you too. Only spent about 15 mins on the stand all weekend - too much to see & do!

Some sad news though - not sure if anyone else has seen this press release from the event from late yesterday afternoon:

It is with great regret that the organisers of the Silverstone Classic have to report that, following an accident in a race for HGPCA pre-66 Grand Prix Cars today, Sunday 27th July, the driver of car number 19, Denis Welch, succumbed to his injuries later in the circuit’s Medical Centre.

The event organisers, the race organisation, and the circuit’s medical and emergency services, will all now be co-operating with the Police and the MSA, the UK official motor sport governing body, to conduct a full investigation.

All those involved in the event offer sincere condolences to family and the friends of Denis Welch at this very sad time.

Rest in peace chap

To anyone who hasn't been to the classic: get your arse there next year!

It was great to meet some of you at the stand, although I was only there briefly as there was so much to see and do. Had a good chat with Bill and Gary, and a couple of others who's names escape me! Apologies to Tom for only briefly saying hello but I was rushing to watch the Historic F1! My intention was to come back to the stand to chat more but I got sucked into the racing and didn't leave leave the trackside until about 2130 after the Group C race - which was immense! I couldn't find the MR2 Mk1 HQ either! Next time you need a bloody great flag like some of the other clubs had!

All in all though it was THE best motorsport event I've ever been to. The racing is fantastic - millions of pounds worth of beautiful classics being driven flat out. The static displays were the best I've ever seen. The Ferrari owner club stand was just incredible, as was the Maserati, Aston, Jaguar, Lotus, BMW etc etc. More car porn than I've ever seen before!

Definitely will be going next year. We need to get as many Mk1s as we can for the parade lap!

I'll upload some of my photos later. I'll have to be selective though as I have about 3GB worth of photos!

SIR STIRLING MOSS LEADS DOUBLE CELEBRATION AT THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC

https://gallery.mailchimp.com/4f77c64c602ee311b5bf81f89/images/9ae9338c-c9b8-4eab-906d-f2b15d8b1f42.jpg

Record number of Grand Prix cars take to the Silverstone Circuit to celebrate 50 years of racing at Silverstone
Moss re-united with stunning Maserati 250F for two amazing cavalcades
Classic wishes Maserati a 'happy 100' with another glittering parade

Racing legend Stirling Moss OBE led two dazzling parades earlier today (27 July) as the 50th Grand Prix to be held at Silverstone and Maserati’s centenary were celebrated in fine style at the Silverstone Classic.

Silverstone staged its 50th Grand Prix earlier this month in a race won by Lewis Hamilton, and to mark that magical milestone the largest collection of Grand Prix cars ever assembled – 84 in total – took to the famous Northamptonshire track.

Moss led the parade in a Maserati 250F, and was joined at the front by David Brabham, son of three-time World Champion Jack who was also celebrated at this year's Classic. The Australian passed away earlier this year and remains the only man to take the ultimate F1 title in a car bearing his own name, and fittingly David was driving a Brabham BT24 today.

A quite incredible array of Grand Prix cars followed the two racing legends. These included several pre-WW2 machines from the Brooklands era right up to Lotuses and Williams from the more modern DFV era. The parade also featured the Talbot-Lago T26C that was entered into the first Silverstone Grand Prix for Lord Selsdon and the Cooper of inaugural BTCC champion Jack Sears who was back behind the wheel in 2014 more than 50 years after he first raced the car.

As the glorious Grand Prix machinery pitted Sir Stirling continued in the 250F and was joined by a huge collection of Maseratis. The Italian manufacturer is the award-winning event’s official ‘Celebration Marque’ for 2014 and celebrating its first 100 years with a special parade of its finest road and competition cars. It was a fitting reunion for Moss, now aged 84, as he won two Grand Prix in the 250F back in 1956.

Alfieri Maserati – son of Ernesto, one of the founding brothers – took to the track alongside Moss' 250F, and the variety of Italian exotica on-track was quite astonishing. From the latest luxury Ghibli to rarely-seen Maserati motorcycles from the 1950s, every period in the manufacturer's glittering history was represented on the iconic Silverstone Circuit.

Today's two impressive parades followed more anniversary celebrations yesterday, as the Ford Mustang celebrated its 50th birthday with its own parade of 175 stunning examples of American muscle.

Sir Stirling Moss said: "The Silverstone Classic is an absolutely terrific event – what's so wonderful is that people can actually see all these glorious cars and talk to the mechanics and drivers. The 250F is such a fabulous car – absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful occasion – to be driving a car like this is just magic and reminds me just how fabulous the Maserati was. I guess it shows just how good it was if you can win a race like Monaco in one. I still have pretty vivid memories of the first Grand Prix here at Silverstone which was back in 1948 when I was racing a 500cc in the support race. I also remember the 1950 race as I met the King and Queen which was a bit special. In fact I have got lots of happy memories of Silverstone, I think it was one of the circuits I didn’t crash on! It's just been an astonishing day."

David Brabham said: "It's been an incredibly special day at the Silverstone Classic. It was a really fantasic feeling to be in the parade at all, but to be alongside Sir Stirling Moss was really amazing. We were chatting away before we went out, and to see so many beautiful cars behind us on track made it a brilliant day not just for me but for everyone here. I remember talking to my dad about who was the best and he had no hesitation in saying Stirling Moss – whatever he drove he was fast in. The crowds really appreciated the parade, and with Stirling up front in the Maserati 250F was very cool."

Alfieri Maserati said: "Where better than Silverstone to celebrate the Centenary of the 'Officine Alfieri Maserati'. Maseratis were built for racing and after 100 years is undergoing a great renaissance. It has been a joy to participate in the parade of over 200 Maseratis from years gone by."

SILVERSTONE CLASSIC
GETS OFF TO A SCORCHER

• World's Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival is go, go, go!
• Former BTCC Champion Gordon Shedden grabs debut pole
• BBC MasterChef finalist Jodie Kidd joins 90s GT Legends line-up
• Scene set for epic weekend of races, parades and top class family entertainment

The 2014 Silverstone Classic soared into action today (25 July) as the qualifying sessions were completed in sizzling conditions at the world famous Northamptonshire venue.

With more than 1100 cars on the bill – from pre-war Grand Prix machines to 1990s GT Legends – the Silverstone Classic is firmly cemented as the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival.

Sensational cars spanning the full spectrum of motor sport wowed the crowds ahead of a packed weekend schedule of 22 races, glittering parades, dazzling displays of classic cars and a whole host of further family entertainment.

2012 British Touring Car Champion and Silvertstone Classic debutant Gordon Shedden proved to be one of the stars of the show as he secured a pole position and a third place in his Ford Lotus Cortina, which he’ll share over the weekend with his regular BTCC team-mate and triple champion Matt Neal.

Scotsman Shedden set the pace in the Sir John Whitmore Trophy for Under 2 Litre Touring Cars and will line-up on row two for the Mustang Celebration Trophy Presented by Pure Michigan – a session that was topped by Mike Gardener’s Ford Falcon.

These were not the only tin top stars and cars on show, however, as the hugely popular Jet Super Touring Car Trophy boasts an entry of more than 40 cars from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Honda Accord of James Dodd took the honours ahead of former World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff, who was piloting one of the legendary Prodrive-built Ford Mondeos. The #1 Accord of Stewart Whyte was third, whilst old BTCC rivals Patrick Watts and John Cleland will start the race from fourth and fifth respectively.

The FIA Masters Historic Formula One is always one of the highlights of an umissable weekend and it was Michael Lyons – the youngest ever winner of an F1 race – who stole the show in qualifying with a blistering lap of 1:54.303s in the Hesketh 308E. A packed grid of DFV-powered Lotuses, McLarens, Tyrrells, Marches and Williams’ will contest two races during the event and represent the most modern era of F1 on show.

Single-seater action came thick and fast with the Peter Arundell Trophy for Historic Formula Juniors kicking off proceedings this morning. David Methley set the fastest lap with a last gasp effort, pipping Sam Wilson’s Lotus to the first coveted pole position. The father and son combination of Michael and Andrew Hibberd led the way early on before having to settle for fifth and third respectively. The Cooper T59 of Jonathan Milicevic was sandwiched between them in fourth.

Formula 3 cars are making their Classic bow in 2014 and it was Nick Padmore who took the honours in a March 783. A 1962 Brabham BT4, driven by Jason Minshaw, fittingly topped the Jack Brabham Memorial Trophy for HGPCA Pre ‘66 GP Cars, whilst the Lotus 16 of Philip Walker claimed pole position in the Maserati Centenary Trophy for HGPCA Pre ‘61 GP Cars.

The quite stunning yellow Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB of Gary Pearson and Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver claimed the sports car headlines, edging out its rivals for pole position in the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Pre ’63 GT cars after trading blows with the Jaguar E-type of Jon Minshaw for much of the session. Times were close at the head of the field, with the top five all covered by less than 0.7s. Derek Hood and Chris Ward cruised to a pole position in their Cooper Jaguar T33 in the RAC Woodcote Trophy for Pre ’56 Sports Cars.

The blast for 90s GT Legends came to a dramatic and premature end when a Jaguar XJ220 GT set on fire following an engine problem. Supermodel Jodie Kidd – runner-up in the recent BBC Celebrity MasterChef *– ran in the shortened session but will get a further chance to showcase the sensational Jaguar XJ220 in the remaining high-speed demonstrations over the weekend.

Phil Keen kept his powder dry until it really mattered in the Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre ’61 Sports Cars qualifying session as he claimed pole position on his final tour in the glorious Lister Jaguar Knobbly. The car was already running well in the hands of team-mate Jon Minshaw but it was Keen’s lap that eventually relegated the Lotus 15 of the McIntyres down to second. Chris Ward’s Lister will line-up alongside the Ferrari of Bobby Verdon-Roe and Nick Leventis on row two.

Chief Silverstone instructor Chris Ward set the pace in the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for pre-’56 Sports Cars. The Cooper T33 pilot saw off the challenge from the Cooper T38 of Patrick Blakeney-Edwards and Frederic Wakeman, whilst last year’s winners – the Pearson brothers – had to settle for third in the beautiful Jaguar D-type.

The TVR Griffith of Sean and Michael McInerney snatched pole in the Chopard International Trophy For Pre ’66 GT Cars by just 0.252s from the Jaguar E-type of Chris Scragg and Matt Nicoll-Jones.

FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars and Group C Endurance rounded out the opening day action in enthralling fashion, with the famous cars from Le Mans covering nearly four decades of history.

The Lola T70 topped the former with Simon Hadfield and Leo Voyazides sharing driver duties. The session also featured former FIA GT Champion Jamie Campbell-Walter piloting the spectacular Ferrari 512, the model in which starred in the Steve McQueen blockbuster movie Le Mans.

Group C ran into the sunset and was dominated by Bob Berridge in the Silver Arrows Mercedes C11. The chasing pack included an evocative line-up of Jaguars, Nissans and Porsches.

There were the first of the weekend’s many celebratory on-track parades during the day, most notably for the Mazda MX-5 Owners Club, with further cavalcades planned over the weekend for Maserati’s centenary celebrations, Ford Mustang’s 50th anniversary and a record procession of Grand Prix cars.

Silverstone Classic’s ‘Rocking and Racing’ mantra will see live music concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Canned Heat headline the action this evening, whilst Bonnie Tyler will be performing tomorrow.

The BRDC Silverstone Classic Dinner presented by Hattingley Valley, which is honouring the unique career achievements of John Surtees, is also on Friday evening’s menu.

The busy schedule of classic car races kick off first thing on Saturday morning and will run until dusk with the highly anticipated Group C Endurance.

All of this plus a fun fair, air displays and a whole host of further family entertainment on offer suggests we’re in for a spectacular and successful 2014 Silverstone Classic.
