Hi all, after seeing and drooling over the mk1 as a kid and finding myself in need of a new car I have impulse bought a 1989 mk1 off eBay without even seeing it. Probably not my greatest decision ever but I'm hugely excited. It has mot is apparently mechanically sound but has rusting front arches.

Glad to find a nice active forum site, I am planning on picking up on Wednesday so will keep everyone posted on it.

In the meantime does anyone know anything of G555 HNT. I've checked with reg transfers and the reg is worth more than I paid so if its a known dog don't worry about upsetting me and I'm also pretty difficult to offend. (I'm a black country chap with long ginger hair living down south so my skins pretty thick ;-)

Finally, if anyone has advice on best insurer it would be listened to I've been recommended Footman James so far but have no quotes in yet.

Ring them all, there can be a massive difference between the cheapest & most expensive depending on your circumstances.... Im not sure there is a ginger driver specialist, but you never know your luck :+:

If it's to be your daily drive, like mine is, you may end up looking at the compare sites - don't feel bad - it was the only way I could get a premium that was less than 400 quid. And it was a lot less than 400 quid with 1stCentral.

Hello and welcome. I haven't known of that reg no and I am a bit weird and recognise number plates.

Whereabouts down South are you based?

Hi all and thanks for the warm welcome.

I would have replied earlier but I've been driving round with a huge grin on my face despite the rain

I'm based in Newbury during the week but the better half lives in Essex so I'm often over there at the weekends. On a side note she took the surprise purchase remarkably well ;)

I managed to get insurance at what I thought was a fantastic price of just over £200 for a 10,000 mile policy with commuting and key care. Pretty chuffed.

The car seems pretty original, needed welding for the last MOT, and will probably need some more for the next. The o s floor is coroded and the front wings are holed but I'm going to get these sorted asap, any advice would be appreciated. Mechanically seems fine, I've never been in one before but it picks up fine, always seems to be wanting to go faster and all electrics bar a headlight bulb work fine.

Kind of unbeliveable that this car is actually 23 years old. So glad I spotted it on ebay and that I had the guts to buy it sight unseen. I got a remarkable car for a crazy price. The only question I have for myself is why I didn't buy one before.

ooh, almost my territory. I really should get an Essex meet up.

I will organise one over the next couple of days for mid December (can come along in Non MR2). It will probably be in South Weald, or North Weald. one of the Wealds

A meet in Essex would be attended, if not working.

I'm still loving the car, and the forum. So far been welcomed and also offered some new wings, also looking through the threads have seen some fantastic help given freely by one member to another. This has led me to take up a paid membership on here.

Driving everywhere at the moment with a huge smile on my face :D

I have spotted some surface rust around the rear arches where it looks like the car has been scraped along a wall at some point. I I follow the usual rust dealings (rub down to clean metal and prime to protect) how easy will it be to match the red paintwork on the car?
