Right, bit of a long shot as I know I'm not an established member, but... Would anyone consider a meet in Sheffield (similar to the 1 organised by Douglas and Tom) where I have a fairly kitted out garage (lots of tools, jacks, pillar drill, grinder, welder, etc.) and also a poorly MR2 that requires a bit of attention in the form of some welding to the chassis rails?
I have decent spanner sense and I'll take on most jobs but despite owning a welder, I have never done anything complicated with it. I would obviously provide lots of food & drink of whatever type and anyone can come and use my tools and chat/swap advice & stories, get bits done to their car with possibly the aim of patching up the front of mine to MOT standard...

There might be a chance to scavenge any bits of my car if someone condemns it too so it could turn into an autojumble...

There's plenty of drive space around mine and I'm pretty close to some very good driving roads (Fulwood is on the RHS of this map http://goo.gl/maps/GFOzG).

I'm pretty flexible on dates but I guess it would be better to do it before the winter weather sets in so I've suggested a fortnights time to try and beat the freeze...

Hi Sam,

Great idea! Have you got any pictures of the welding that's required?

I may be working that Saturday but if not I'll gladly come along. I'm busy on the Sunday too. I'm totally free the following weekend though!

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Sam
If I don't have mine in bits spread out over my own garage, I'll try to come over and lend a hand. Again, not an experienced welder, me, but enthusiastic!

Cheers

As I said, I'm flexible on dates. The following Saturday would work just as well for me. I'll get some shots up tomorrow as I've started stripping down the area to get closer to it.

Cheers

You said 'chassis rails' - is MIG welding going to be up to the job? Or do you have a stick welder or gas to hand as well or instead?

I should be able to come along Sam, not in my MR2 though it is sorned for winter. I have a mig and a stick welder so I will bring both. I will come in the van and load it with tools :-)

I'm not sure on whether mig is up to it. I have 150amp MIG although I need a regulator for the gas as currently it's running gasless. As requested, a couple of picures of the NS from chassis rail.

I don't want this just to be about patching mine up, like I said, I've got plenty of tools and space to sort out some other bits on other cars...

Any preference on dates for those, I might put together a list on the first post for who can make what :)

That looks a mammoth task to repair I've got some pictures of how I repaired mine but sadly when I went to the other side the leg was totaled thats why I bought another 2. If you want me to post them no worries just ask or pm me and i'll email them to you.

If you're fast I can cut a section of chassis leg out of my scrap shell for you.

That does look pretty bad Sam, I have a small stick welder and am fairly good with it (not so good with mig). We can only try mate, get plenty of sheet metal in though :-)

Ouch, I was hoping you'd go the other way and say it's not too bad. I'll get to stripping it down this weekend and see how bad it gets. Cabbydave, that might be a lifesaver, I guess it would be less effort than making repair panels from scratch. Would you want anything for them?

If it will keep your car on the roas just the price of the cutting discs I use have a look how I did it I unpicked one side of the chassis leg so I could get a good strong weld from inside then plugged the part I unstitched back onthen you can just make the leg look nice with a thin skim of filler and grind the plug welds down to make a neat job

Good plan Bill its still got a toyota sticker on it. Anything else I should cut out apart from the roof as i've got plans for that.

Right, well the good news is I had a good poke around on the OS and it's solid so doesn't need any welding doing on that side. From what I can tell, what you see is what needs doing. I'm struggling with getting the front bumper off, feeling pretty stupid atm.

Dave: Sorry I didn't get in touch, ended up being out of contact with the internet for 24 hours after I messaged you.

So do people fancy a bit of a gathering this Saturday? As I said, bring along any jobs you might need doing as I love tinkering and I've got the tools/space

I'm out unfortunately. :(

Been selected to do some overtime on Saturday and after my recent spending splurge could do with the extra money! Have fun all those that go!

Cheers,
Tom

Front bumper can be a bit of a pig have you got a long strong arm? you will also need a 14mm 6 point socket and a 17 mm 6 point socket and a extension plus a 10mm for the top of the bumper dont for get the two nuts either side under the eyebrows and the nasty nasty ones that join the bumper to the wing that always rust to death those could need a meet with mr dremmel and a grinding stone

samwell

I'm fine for tools. None of the 10mm ones along the front have undone, they're all just spinning. Need to take the lights out to get the brows off I imagine?

I think you're right about the wing joiners. Hopefully I can get an evening on it this week as I made no progress at the weekend.

If you need any bits just contact me I should have something in the garage if I can find it (you've not seen my garage)

Hey folks, not wanting to be pushy but who reckons they might be able to come along on Saturday? I know coverco and julianw have suggested they might be able to attend. It would be nice to have a few more bodies down just to make it a bit more sociable. I've spotted 2 Mk1s within a mile of my house this week (neither of which are members so far as I can tell) so I'm going to drop a note and see if they fancy coming down and meeting a few people. I know I'm not an established member but I do love these cars so it would be great to keep it on the road!
