Just to introduce myself, my Name's Paul and I live between Leeds and Bradford and I'm the owner of a red MK1, pictures shown below.

Just wondered if anyone knows of a decent spanner man in the West Yorkshire area as I'd rather pay an MR2 enthusiast to work on my car than a rip-off garage - nothing too serious - putting replacement seats in and changing the speedo cable etc. - if anyone can suggest anyone it would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the club.

Car is looking good, and it must have been a fun drive to get it up there to take the pics!

I'm sure someone will be able to suggest a good mechanic in your area but im down Manchester/Liverpool way so don't know anyone local to you I'm afraid.

Thanks for your kind words Rick although, I am obliged to tell you that the photos are quite flattering where the paintwork's concerned.....

I'm sure someone will turn up who can help out with the spanners even if it means an hour or so's drive.

Hi BigP,

Welcome to the club site!

I'm based in Sheffield and could help you out with a few jobs on your car. Are the replacement seats from another Mk1?

The peaks run is a great day out!

How long have you had your car?

Cheers,
Tom

If you want to travel over to sunny Stockport one day I would change your seats and do the dreaded speedo cable. There are a few jobs on a MK1 that are nightmare throttle and speedo cables are 2 of them nearly as bad as changing a fuel pump. If you want to come over i'll make sure I have parts with the bolts that are going to shear on yours ready to put on yours. Happy soul me arn't I lol If you want a speedo cable i've got 3 spare here

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I already have the speedo cable, but looking for some seats as my leather has had it - I'm thinking of switching to cloth - any thoughts - I know they'll be warmer in the winter, and I'm not bothered about keeping the car original?

As for the work I need doing, I'm planning on doing the Peak District run next Sunday, so if Tom and Dave are they we'll have a chat a see what we can arrange.

One other question, are there any replacement speakers available for these cars - the originals sound crap and I'd rather just replace them than start bolting large subs under the seats etc.?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

I will take some pictures of how the speakers have been fitted in my new mk1 on Friday when it arrives at my house. There was a guy on ebay selling new covers for the seats in leather for £220.Not a hard job to change if you have done it before.

Welcome Paul. The closest I've ever got to liking leather seats was a half-leather/half-cloth set in a Volvo. Apart from that, it's slippery, not durable, yes - cold in the winter and unbearably hot in the summer, not that we get them up north! I go for cloth every time. Good luck with the work. The car's looking fine already!

Hi Paul and welcome. I am in Barnsley which is not far from you if you need some help. I agree with Julian though leather is a pain in a MK1, I have MK2 turbo seats in mine which are leather on the sides but alcantera on the base and back which means you don't slide around :D

Thanks for all the replies chaps, it looks like the dead cows are history then!

I'm 95% certain I'll be doing the Peak District run so I'll have a chat with people then and make a firm decision on what route to take with the seats.

Can anyone recommend a not too expensive body shop as I have a few niggles that will need sorting in the not too distant future, and I also need the engine checking over as there's a very light oil leak coming from somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Just spotted this ad on IMOC from a guy after some leather seats. Might be worth giving him a shout if you wanna move yours on, or maybe he even has some cloth to part ex?

Thanks Rick, but I think he's looking for "excellent to mint" - the only mint (polo) part of my seats are the holes....
