South West MR2 Meet - 29th July 2007

As there seems to have been a bit of a quite spell recently in the way of meets in the south west amongst all the MR2 owners clubs, I am organizing a South West Meet between all clubs, and for all MR2s, on 29th July 2007.

The plan for the day is to meet up at car park G (Marks and Spencer end) of The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, Bristol at 2pm. I am currently in the process of speaking with The Mall to confirm that it would be ok for us to meet there as it seems to be the most popular and easiest place for all to find.

At around 3/3:30 pm we will leave The Mall after having a bit of a chat and looking over each others cars we will go to Clifton Downs via the city centre for more photo opportunities, a bit of a chat again and some football. We will be leaving at around 5pm.

We are all then planning to make our way to Weston-Super-Mare seafront. Another great opportunity for Photo's and a bite to eat. No doubt the football will be out again and for those not quite fit enough (me included) there's plenty of pubs/arcades etc. that line the sea front!

As mentioned before there hasn't been a meet in the South West among any of the MR2 clubs for quite sometime and I'm sure one topic of conversation will be setting up regular meets. Whether that be between individual clubs or as a whole.

MR2 Only Magazine have said that they will be interested in possibly showing a few photo's of the day and a bit of a write up, so get those polishing kits ready and hope to see you all at Cribbs Causeway at 2!

DJCC PUB MEET - JANUARY 7th 2007

As I happened to be in the area over the Christmas and New Year period I thought I would pop along and see what this meet would be like as I had seen their website while browsing the internet.

I phoned Ashley, a fellow club member that lived close by to see if he was interested in popping along on the day, that would give us a chance to meet up and have a chat. We arranged to meet them at the pub at 1pm.

On the day I left work just after 12.15 as it was a half hour drive from Portland to The Sunray pub in Osmington on the outskirts of Weymouth in Dorset> On arriving at 12.45 I found the car park to already be full with a good selection of cars,

I was met by Ashley and Ali who had kept me a space in the main car park (thanks for moving your car) although they did not have their MK1 with them as it was laid up for the winter, We caught up with what we had been doing since we last met at the Thornfalcon meet last September.

I had a good look around the cars there, they even had two of my favourites, a Subaru and a Mitsubishi Evo 8 MR FQ300, although the weather was not too good with a couple of showers I still had a good afternoon, then just as I was getting ready to leave a very nice yellow and black MK2 arrived.

There must have been 30 cars in all when I arrived, and another 6 turned up later, so a popular meet as the club has not been going for long. A good selection of Japanese makes from a lovely NSX to an MX5.

I would recommend that if you have nothing on and they meet up in your area, to pop along and see what there is as they change the meets each month, check out their web site at http://www.djcc.co.nr/

15th JULY 2006

Hello All,

I just thought I would let you know that as from immediate effect I shall be standing down as regional organiser of the South West area. I still have two events ongoing, which I shall see out, but I shall not be looking to organise anything else. My reason behind this is purely down to members lack of interest. I have tried to get things moving but it does appear to be very difficult to get anyone interested in attending anything. Please don't take this the wrong way, its just that my life is very busy, as is everyones, and I could do with having one less thing in my schedule to organise, especially with so little interest.

Anyway I hope I still may bump into some of you on my travels and hope you enjoy your '2's for many years to come.
All the best

UPDATE 14th MAY 2006

There are a few events going on locally this year that might be worth organising a MK1 club presence, if I can get enough interest.

The first is the South West Motor Show at Newton Abbot on the 18th of June. It’ a biggish event by all accounts and covers a wide spectrum of motoring.
Here's the link. http://www.southwestmotorshow.com/

Cost to get in if showing is £4 per car, which is pretty good if you ask me. If you do want to come, you have around a week to sort out your entry form. Its downloadable from the website. Sorry its such short notice but it has only just been bought to my attention recently.
What do you all think?

The next one is the South west festival of transport. This one is being held at Taunton race course on Sunday the 16th of July. I don't know to much about this one other than than the location and I'm pretty sure its new for this year. I have no other info on it at the moment but will find out a bit more this week if there is some interest.
here's the website http://www.swfestivalofmotoring.co.uk/

Another one worth our attention would be The Yeovilton Air day on Saturday July 8th. It is a great place to get some exposure to the public with a huge public attendence. This event will be a joint event with the MR2 owners club as they have had a stand there now for a few years.

The website for the event is: http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/server.php?show=nav.00h00100800100400j

Entry for this event is £9 for the car driver and £14 for the passenger.

Forms have to be in by the 23rd of June.

There is also a car show at Powderham Castle on July 8th and 9th. This is a gathering of a large number of classic car clubs but as of yet I have not made contact. I will do so if someone is interested in attending. I would only be able to attend on the Sunday, but will do if interest is there.

The website link is: http://www.cbccc.net/hvg/info-index.htm

Last up is the Thornfalcon Car show at Hatch Beauchamp on 17th September.

This is a great morning event and massive gathering of cars from all ages. I have been going now for a few years and it suprises me how much bigger it gets each year. The first year I attended it was on the local playing field. Last year it was still on this playing field but also in 3 fields out behind! They do state this is the largest informal gathering of its type in the South West and probably one of the largest in the country. Put it in your diary this is one you shouldn't miss.

Here's the website: http://www.thornfalconcarsales.co.uk/events.htm

I think thats it this time, but if any of you think of any others let me know. If any of you are interested in the above get in touch by phone, email or post.

All the best,

Steve Hallett

South West regional organiser

UPDATE 2nd APRIL 2006

Hello All, Now the better weather is coming along and I am just putting the finishing touches to the MR2's winter repairs, it must be time to think about having a meet again. I was wondering if anyone was interested in a pub meet at sometime in the near future? How about the usual venue at The Ley Arms just outside of Exeter? How about May 7th? If any of you fancy it please let me know, as I shall not be travelling down there unless at least one other car is going to turn up :)

Don't forget there are other events on during the summer months. Japfest is in the middle of May and also we will hope to be attending Mount Edgcumbe and Thornfalcon again. I would also like to attend the South West Motor Show at Newton Abbot racecourse on the 18th of June. We also have JAE to think about as well.

That said if anybody has an event they think might be worth attending, let me know as soon as possible so we can contact everyone and make a go of it. I do keep my eyes open for events in the area, but won't catch them all.

If you have any questions, get in touch.
All the best

SOUTH WEST AND SEVERN AREAS JOINT MEETING

See HAYNES MEET for report and pictures.

I have spoken with the Severn regional organiser, Jeff Harper, and we have had the idea of coming up with a joint meet in July. What we propose is a meet at Haynes motor museum on Sunday the 17th of July.

What we have come up with is, if you wish to go and have a look around the museum then the arrival time is 12pm. If you don’t fancy a look around then you could meet up with us at 2pm, still in Haynes car park, and we can go on to a pub for a drink and a chat afterwards. If anyone can come up with an idea for something to do after the look around the museum, we would be glad to hear it.

Admission prices are £6.95 for adults, £3.75 for children aged between 4 and 15 years and £5.50 for senior citizens. If we get enough interest then there is a discount for clubs, but we need around 15 people to benefit from this.

We also have to other events in the future which I would like to bring to your attention now. The first is the Vintage, Classic and American car event at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park on Sunday, 7th August. This is at Cremyll near Plymouth. The entry fee for this event is £5. Let me know if your interested and I can e-mail it to you or with a bit of luck it will be linked to somewhere on this page. One of our members, Martyn, and wife Dawn are putting a lot of effort in on this one, so if you could turn up and make their efforts worthwhile, it would be great to see you.

The other event is the Thornfalcon classic car event on Sunday, 18th of September, and like the Mount Edgcumbe event is in aid of charity. It is one of the largest informal meetings of its type in the country, with on average around 700 cars attending throughout the morning. It covers many different types of cars covering the best part of the 100 years or so of the motorcar. There is no entry charge as such, but there is a collection for charity. I have spoken with the organisers and they are happy to give the club a pitch, but they would like to get some idea of how many may be attending. I would like to give them a few weeks notice, so if you are interested than let me know by the end of August.

Anyone fancy a pub meet on the 29th of May? If so let me know, and I will be there.

I think that about covers it for now, any question just get in touch.

All the best

SOUTH WEST SPRING MEET SUNDAY 3rd APRIL 2005

How do all, we had out first meet of the season on Sunday the 3rd of April and although not a record breaking turn out, it was pleasant to see some familiar faces and some new ones as well.

We arrived at 12pm, and realised that it was the same Sunday of the month that the local AC Cobra club meet there, so I was a bit concerned about clashing with the regulars, anyway it wasn’t a problem in the end.

In total 4 cars turned up, 2 1A specs and 2 1Bs. Ali’s freshly refurbished MK1A was particularly smart, and a very nice example indeed. Other than Ashley and Ali, there was myself, obviously, my partner Chan, Tom, 2 Nicks and one of the Nick’s boy, Jack. We had a drink and a bit of a chat, some of us had a bite to eat as well while we were there, to be honest the other half blackmailed me into it.

Anyway, I said to those present that we would change the meet from the first Sunday of the month to the last instead. This will save us from clashing with the AC crowd, and I know some of the locals like to attend other MR2 clubs meeting’s which tend to be on that date. I’m not sure weather we will have a meeting at the end of April or not as it is the day after Castle Combe and we have already had on this month.

I would ask anybody who is going to attend a Sunday meeting, to get in touch with me before setting off. Being a bit new to this game, we might end up not meeting at the pub every month, what with other events going on during the summer months and I am thinking of compiling a list of events we might attend, but its early days yet.

Thanks to all that turned up on the day, and hope to see a few more of you around at some point. Any questions, get in touch, I don’t bite.

Cheers,

Steve

FIRST MEET SUNDAY 28th MARCH 2004

The South West region of the club has now had its first meeting at the Ley Arms, near Exeter. There was a really good turn out. I wasn’t expecting too many people to the first meet but in the end we had 8 cars turn up. There was almost every variation from Ashley Goodfield’s tin-top import to a T-bar supercharger and everything in between.

It was great to see all the cars lined up outside the pub, that was until someone parked a Nissan Micra in between. Kind of spoiled the effect! After an hour of studying everyone’s cars we made it into the pub to warm up a bit. Everyone was really friendly and the informal atmosphere made it a pleasant lunchtime. So a big thank you to everyone who turned up. You made me very happy. I was not expecting to see 8 cars. That really made my day.

The last weekend of April has a track day at Castle Coombe. Everyone agreed that a trip up there would be great fun. We can see who is brave enough to venture out on to the circuit. Even if it is just for the parade lap!

The next meeting at the Ley Arms will be the last Sunday in May 30th. Hopefully we will beat March’s attendance.

SARAH LITCHFIELD

Thanks to a good response to my plea on the website and the mail shot to local members, the South West region can officially be given the go ahead.

I have found a great pub near Exeter that I think is ideally placed for most members, and the manager was most welcoming to my enquiries for a regular monthly meeting. The pub has a great atmosphere and an extensive menu including a carvery. I have settled on the last Sunday of the month as an easy date to remember. The first meeting therefore will be on Sunday 28th March at 12 O’clock.

The pub is called the Ley Arms – pronounced Lee – and is in the village of Kenn, just off the A38 at Haldon Hill (see map) To everyone who has replied I will see you there and to everyone else please make the effort.
