SEVERN AREA REPORT - JUNE 2005
Steve Hallett, South West area organiser and myself are organising a joint
meet between the South West and Severn groups for a run to the Haynes Motor
Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil, Somerset on Sunday 17th July.
For those wishing to go inside the museum we suggest meeting in the car park
at 12 noon. For those who choose not to we suggest arriving at 2pm. We could
then drive to a local beauty spot or a pub if the weather is bad. Apparently
there is a MK1 in the museum. Entry to the museum is £6.95. Hoping all can come
and make it a good meet.
See you there,
Jeff and Viv Harper
SEVERN AREA REPORT - MARCH 2005
It has been a quiet few months but spring is just around the corner and we
are hoping for some good club activities.
I recently called to see club member Matt Holmes, who lives a couple of miles
from me. After looking over my car, a rather well used Tbar, but tidy example,
Matt opened his garage door and standing there in the shape of a MK1 was a
tailored dustsheet including wing mirrors. Matt switched on the garage lights
and removed the dust cover to reveal a red Tbar in A1 perfect condition, and
hardly used. I sat inside and could still smell the black leather, very envious.
This car was the best MR2 I have ever seen. The walls of the fully carpeted
garage were covered with photos, pictures and newspaper cuttings of Matt’s
previous cars. We had a long chat over a cup of coffee and agreed to meet up
again.
Before Christmas Viv and I spent a very enjoyable weekend break in Weymouth,
one of our favourite places. Our hotel bedroom overlooked the beach and the
hotel is within easy walking distance of the shopping centre and harbour. On
arriving in Weymouth we realised that club members and old friends from previous
meets, Ashley and Ali Goodfield lived here. Unfortunately we didn’t have their
phone number or address on us. We spent some of Saturday afternoon looking for
them, and by sheer luck found Ali shopping in the town. We arranged to meet up
in the evening in “The Ship”. We all arrived at 6pm on a wet and cold night and
sat next to the pub’s large open fire. The conversation was obviously about the
club and Ali suggested light heartedly that this could be the first meeting of
the Weymouth branch.
Ali told us that she has bought yet another MK1 - a 1A this time - to add to
their collection – 4 I think. She’s put it in store for restoration. We
eventually had to leave the fire and go our separate ways.
Our MK1 is off the road at present with major brake problems and no tax, but
should be back on the road on the 1st April and raring to go.
Any suggestions from Severn group members for events, shows, runs etc. would
be welcomed.
Looking forward to hearing from you all and seeing you soon.
Kind regards,
Jeff and Viv Harper
The Clubs latest area is being set up centered on Bristol and will be known
as the Severn Area which covers Bristol and the surrounding areas. We have the
names, addresses and telephone numbers of all members with BS postcodes and I
have contacted all of them with a letter suggesting a meeting place and ideas
for runs.
There are 15 members and ourselves from Weston-super-Mare in the south and up
to Thornbury and Yate in the north, of these members we have had six replies.
All would be welcome to a meet at Uphill Beach car park at Weston-super-Mare on
Sunday 4th July at 1pm. Hope to see you all there.
