ENFIELD PAGEANT OF MOTORING - SUNDAY 29th JUNE 2005

For the first time, the MR2 MK1 Club enjoyed taking part in the Enfield Pageant of Motoring over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The Enfield Pageant was originally held to raise funds to help secure the future continuation of the Whitewebbs Museum of Transport in Enfield, which is an independently run museum for early steam vehicles. The pageant of motoring was first held in 1978 and has since grown into a prominent event in the international motoring calendar.

There were lots of vehicles on show from steam driven engines to modern current day cars, club stands, individual entries, a large fun fair, the traditional arena events and an enormous contingent of auto jumble stands.

The show is held over three days but the main car show is held on the Sunday and Bank holiday Monday. Our pitch was placed next to the Drivers Club (DC). This was good because it transpired that there were no other Japanese clubs at the show. However, for some unexplained reason the DC failed to arrive over the whole weekend. The show organizers noticed this and told us of their annoyance with them and that there would be retribution. Looks like there’s only going to be one MR2 club at the show next year then!

We had a lot of support for the show at Enfield and we were able to fill our allocated space on both days with different cars which pleased us immensely so a big thanks to all those who came and displayed their cars.

Once again the cars attracted quite a lot of attention throughout the weekend, a few people we spoke to told us they owned MK1 MR2s and became quite excited when they saw the club name in the list of club displays. One particular enthusiast we met had owned his MK1 since he was 19, and has owned it for nearly 20 years. He still loves it and has finally joined the club, better late than never!! Another came and joined us on the MR2 Brighton Run the following week. Well done Desi, we hope you enjoyed it.

The main theme in the marquee adjacent to the arena was dedicated to ‘Bentleys of Yesteryear’ a large display of Bentleys including the latest coupe to a restored original 3 Litre race car that was built specifically to take part in the 1925 Le Mans 24 hour race, unfortunately it didn’t finish the race because it ran out of petrol. The whole display was absolutely stunning and must have been worth a fortune.
