KENT RUN - SUNDAY 14th AUGUST 2005
The Weather looked good as I set off down the M20 from Maidstone. Within a couple
of minutes we spotted a couple of MK2s on the inside lane we gave them a
toot and we were off racing down to the Ashford meeting point (obviously
traveling at the legal speed limit!). This for me set the whole tone of the day, lots
of fun and some great MR2 driving in convoy!!!!!!!
We all met at Burger King on the Eureka Business Park between 12 and 1pm. We were supposed to leave around 12:30 originally but
everyone was having a good chat and looking at each others cars. Steve Kingsnorth and myself took names and handed out maps and
directions. It was like a day of two halves; a static meet followed by a run!!!!
Pete Mason (Kent Run Organizer) gave the shout at 1pm and we rolled out of the car
park. What a sight it was 23 MR2s in convoy plus 2 high spec Supras
and a couple of regular cars (due to repairs being undertaken I guess). Just as we were leaving the
Eureka business park we spotted Mike JC from IMOC coming round the roundabout!!!! He
tagged onto the convoy we had no doubt he would catch up with the guys up the
front being as he drives a beautiful MK2 turbo.
We went down the M20 for one exit then turned off onto the country roads where
the real run kicked off. We twisted and turned through the Kent countryside until we got down to Dymchurch where
we took the coastal road along through St.Mary’s Bay, New Romney and Littlestone.
At this point we made our way to the Britannia Pub for our lunch stop. Time for a pint, a bite
to eat and a chat! I did spot some pretty nice fish and chips coming out from
the kitchen, perhaps I will indulge next year!
After about an hour we were off again travelling through Camber and negotiating more
tight little roads just ideal for the MR2 to be driven through. One more stop
was made at the Little Chef on the A259 just to catch your breath and then we
were back on the road to start driving the final leg of the run.
We all came tearing out of the Little Chef and 90% of us missed the first exit
off of the roundabout and went straight across!!! After some frantic turning
around we were off again.
The last part of the run took us through Appledore, Tenterden, Woodchurch and Kenardington.
From there we took the A2070 to Ashford where the Kent Coast run finished up with a drink at The French Connection Pub.
A great time was had by all, the roads were not busy and most of us managed to stay in convoy for the whole day.
I would like to say a big thank you to Pete Mason and his other half Kel
for organizing a great day. I see on the IMOC forum that many of you enjoyed
the day and would like more runs out during the year. The South East boys will
look into this we might be able to arrange at least one other run during the summer months!
