MR2 CHALLENGE - BRANDS HATCH, KENT SUNDAY 13th AUGUST 2006

The day started off nice and early with some of the South East gang meeting up at the Dartford services for a spot of breakfast. After the cars and drivers were sufficiently fuelled up we made our way over the Dartford crossing and down the M20 to Brands Hatch for the MR2 Challenge.

Alan Scott from the drivers club had very kindly arranged for many of us to buy race day tickets from him which included the use of his company’s Grandstand hospitality suite.

Practice started at 10am and the pouring rain didn’t seem to deter any of the drivers there were quite a few good lap times being made!

Before the afternoon’ racing started we all took a walk around the paddock and checked out the cars.

I personally find it quite amazing that you can race on such a small budget. Some of the drivers actually drive to each race in their cars take the road plates off, race their cars and hopefully drive back home at the end of the day! There are of course drivers at the other end of the spectrum that have brand new trucks and trailers and all the facilities you could dream of.

The beauty of the challenge it doesn’t matter how you get there because once the cars are out on the track it’s anybodies race, the engines are very strictly scrutinized so the racing is down to driver ability.

The MR2 Challenge race was close with some great tight racing. It was fantastic to see so many MK1s out on the track. Unfortunately a MK2 just made it over the line before the first Mk1. The MK1 had the MK2 on every corner but the 2 litre engine of the MK2 just proved too much for the MK1 on the straight.

Everybody had a great time, and many thanks to Alan Scott again for being our superb host on the day.

Pete Kyte.(South East co-organiser)

MR2s in the very wet paddock.

They’re off! Going into the first corner.

Whoops! Nothing that Jinxy and Kev can’t fix I’m sure!

One of Kevin Poole’s cars this one was the fastest MK1 on the track. Not bad for 167,000 miles!

See you all at Brands Next Year!

Pete.
