Monthly Meeting / Well Lane
MR2 Dyno test day Sunday April 6th 2003
Members Mike Johnson and Viv Allison had pre
arranged a meeting with members of the MR2 community mainly consisting of MR2
Drivers Club and IMOC members. The venue was Well Lane Turbo Performance Centre
in Batley which is near Leeds. With the event being so close to the north east
we decided to postpone JCB digger racing at Diggerland to later in the year and
support Mike and Viv and the rest of the MR2 fanzine. New member Dave Moore and
his dad decided this was going to be a good event and choose to come along and
sample for the first time a dyno test day. Myself and Joanne met up with Dave
and dad at Scotch Corner quite early and armed with our trusty directions
courtesy of StreetMap.co.uk we headed south towards North Yorkshire to meet up
with Mike and Viv. Unfortunately the directions we were so trustingly given
didn't correspond to anywhere on the planet and we ended up asking a policeman
where Well Lane was!! We should have known better, if only we had opened our
ears we would have heard the screaming engines which would have guided us in.
Once there we met up with Mike and Viv who also had problems with the same
directions. Looking around there were a lot of MK2 Turbo's, some sporting
beautiful body kits/alloys, etc. There were 4 MK1's in total including 2
Superchargers.
Some of the MK2 turbo's were producing 300+bhp, amazing performance. Can you
imagine the performance Paul Woods will now have in his MK1 modded MK2 turbo
conversion? Unfortunately Paul was unable to attend this great day which was a
shame as he would have found it very, very interesting.
It was great to see a couple of MK1's on the dyno test. First up
was a standard coupe. At first the car was only producing 75bhp until they
realised the car wasn't sitting properly on the rear rollers. After a few
adjustments the car produced a max of 124bhp much to the relief of the owner.
Next up was Mike Johnsons Supercharger, fresh with a new
oversized pulley. Mike was really using this day to see what gain, if any he
would get from the modification.
I think from memory his best was 171bhp which is impressive, but
not in Mikes opinion, he wanted more!!
After a great Dyno test we decided to crash the north region
Drivers Club meeting at Darrington. What an impressive turn out of MR2's.
Here we spotted a rather nice modded front end of a MK1 with a
Viens kit, and this early MK1 coupe.
We said our hello's to the drivers club, had a spot of lunch and left with
enough time to get back home to watch Everton thrash Newcastle United, much to
the delight of North West Area Organiser Ryan Kevan, next time Ryan, revenge.
Overall a great day. Next meeting on Sunday 4th May, we will be at Ripon
Racecourse for the Classic Car Show where we have a club stand. I have a few
exhibitor passes left if you would like to attend. Ring me ASAP.
