MIDLANDS AREA MONTHLY MEETING - SUNDAY 25th FEBRUARY

Another month has slipped by and we are almost up to the last Sunday in the month once again. The meeting place is as usual at The Charnwood Arms car park, Bardon at 11 am. This month the plan is to have a run over to the eastern edge of the county and into Nottinghamshire finishing up at The Golden Fleece in Upper Broughton for an afternoon meal, the round trip will be approx. 50 miles so make sure that your tanks have sufficient fuel ( no, I don’t mean that your Mk 1 is a tank) as there are few garages on the route.

Please let Doris and I know if you plan to attend for lunch as we need to book, don’t let it stop you coming if you decide Sunday morning to come but in any case our mobile number is below.

Looking forward to seeing you all

MIDLANDS MONTHLY MEETING - SUNDAY 28th JANUARY 2006

Normally our monthly meetings in the winter are brief and we all end up chatting over a hot cuppa in the local pub, but with the promise of another one of Isobel’s monthly mystery tours who would want to sit inside! The last tour Isobel organised was before Christmas and was a great success with steam trains, windmills and some great stops overlooking some beautiful scenery, so we were all really looking forward to another ‘Random Sunday’ as they’re becoming known.

We met as usual at The Charnwood Arms and spent the first half hour getting to know the newcomers, and chatting about….. MR2s of course! Stuart’s newly repaired Karmeleon supercharger made it’s debut appearance and looked fantastic in metallic Jaguar green.

Setting off from the pub about 11.30, we headed towards Stanton under-Bardon. Soon we were winding around country lanes and past Polly’s Bottom (a familiar road on Isobel’s mystery tours). After a few more twists and turns and a scary skid around a muddy corner, we made our first stop, where we were able to feed the ducks and look out for steam trains on the viaduct. Once again Isobel kindly supplied us with a few slices of bread to feed the ducks (and Jo!)

When our bread stocks ran out we headed off towards Mountsorrel where we all squeezed over a narrow hump back bridge and pulled into the Waterside Inn car park. The view was really pretty and it was great to see the barges and boats moored at Mountsorrel lock and the steam rising from the chimneys.

We soon started to get cold at the lock so we got back into the cars and headed towards Barrow upon Soar. Isobel’s route took us straight round a roundabout with what looked like a prehistoric fossil mounted in the centre. I couldn’t quite figure out what it was. Half lizard, half platypus I think!

When we stopped next I thought we had taken a wrong turn as it looked like the middle of a housing estate. It was Jo who pointed out that she could see a silver pole sticking out of the ground a few feet away. On closer inspection it was a giant sundial that was built to celebrate the Millennium. We were all fascinated by this strange structure. Jo even decided that she would climb onto one of the rocks and do her own sundial impression.

We were soon back on the road and down a few more country lanes towards Burton on the Wolds. We were the third car along and felt like we were in a scene from the Italian Job (or Japanese Job!) as there was a white, red and our blue Mk1 following on in a row, and I’m sure you could fit more gold bars in the boot of a Mk1 than a Mini!

Our next stop was Wymeswold where we made our third stop to watch people testing their skill at the indoor F1 Karting centre at Wymeswold industrial estate. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time for a blast around the track and we were all getting peckish so it was time to move on to our last stop.

Our final stop was at the Red Lion Pub at Costock where we all stopped for refreshment and several of us stayed on for a hearty Sunday lunch.

In all, once again we had a fantastic day out with some interesting stops, picturesque villages and great company, and I think I speak for all of us when I say we can’t wait to see what’s in store on the next run.

MIDLANDS AREA MONTHLY MEETING

Sunday 28th January is the first monthly meeting for 2007 of the Midlands area section. The meeting place is as usual at the Charnwood Arms car park Bardon at 11am.

We plan to have a short run around the lovely country lanes of Charnwood after a general chat together, no doubt we will have stories to relate about Christmas and the New Year and how our MR2s are fairing with the winter weather, up to now this year we have had no salt to contend with so that has to be a big plus.

Isobel has once more planned the route we will be taking and has organised a location for a meal to finish the day off.

It would be appreciated if you plan to attend the meeting and lunch to let Doris and I know either by E-mail or phone so that we can plan numbers for the meal and so that we don’t leave anyone behind; but don’t let that stop you if you suddenly decide to turn up because the sun is shining, the more the merrier.

MIDLANDS AREA REPORT - SUNDAY 26th NOVEMBER 2006

The last Sunday in the month during the winter months is becoming an exciting day out with our cars. By a quarter past eleven there were 7 cars all lined up ready for a planned run with lunch at a local pub after.

We had a visitor ; John Wuttrich from Australia, I think that must be a record for distance travelled to attend a monthly meeting, he tried to sneak one of his M1s in with his luggage but with little success so he had to put up with being a passenger with Jo.

We had a new member attending, Collin Stirk from Sileby, thanks for joining us Collin, hope we are going to see you often.

We had a general discussion and with it being a cold day, Doris had brought along hot “Christkindl Gluwein” (mulled wine) and “Stollen” a type of German Christmas cake which went down very well; it’s becoming quite a tradition to have this at our November meet.

Isobel Beardsmore had planned a run around the Leicestershire lanes, the distance approx. 32 miles. Part of the run was to visit three of the stations on the steam trust between Loughborough and Leicester, the idea was to be at the stations at the times of the trains and with Isobel’s skilful timing we rolled up at each station bang on time. We visited the car parks around Bradgate Park, which we found quite full but a good place to show our cars off. The country lanes were free of traffic with it being a cold day, so we were able to enjoy the run in real style, I thought I knew all the lanes around Loughborough but Isobel took us on tracks that we didn’t know existed.

As we neared the end of the run we visited Cropston reservoir to feed the ducks and water birds in general, Isobel had brought bread for us to share and distribute amongst the wild life, well most of the bread went to the wild life but I noticed Jo was having a crafty nibble as she was so hungry by this time, the ducks in front of her didn’t have as much as the rest.

John Wuttrich enjoyed our discussion and part of the run as far as our first stop at Cropston reservoir but had to leave us as Stuart had arrange a traditional Sunday lunch for him at his sisters, a memory he will take back with him to the other side of the world. It would be great if we could have a trip to see all his cars that hardly ever see any rain.

We continued our run back to Loughborough and the Priory Hotel where we had an excellent lunch and finally drifted off home at 4pm, a great day out.

Those attending were:- Isobel Beardsmore. Thanks for a brilliant run.

MIDLANDS AREA REPORT - AUGUST 2006

With the beautiful weather we’ve been enjoying over the last Wednesday evenings of the past three months it was unanimously agreed that we would meet at our usual time and each one of us would take in turn to plan a 10-20 mile jaunt through the country lanes. The trip organiser would then lead our normal turnout of eight cars along the route eventually ending at a pub.

It was my turn on the last Wednesday in July and I decided to make it a reservoir visiting session. We have three smallish reservoirs in Leicestershire and one of them at Swithland has a road bridge at one end and a narrow lane bridge at the other. The views over the water with ducks and herons flying around in the evening sunlight were very tranquil. The committee decided that we would present Jo with a large bouquet of flowers as a thank you for all her hard work organising the recent shows. The pub I had selected was one of our usual ones and only a short distance from my home. The florist I collected the flowers from kindly parcelled the base of the stems in a waterproof bag and added a fair amount of water in order to keep them fresh until Wednesday evening. While everyone else went straight to the pub I nipped home and carefully stood the flowers up in a large bowl and placed them in the footwell. On arrival at the pub everybody but everybody was there taking advantage of the warm weather and sitting at the mass of tables and benches outside. Consequently the only parking space left was rather narrow so I decided I would have to reach over and get the bouquet out the car on my side.

What did I forget – the large amount of water in the bag wasn’t waterproof at the top of the bag so when I had to tilt the bouquet horizontal to get it out the door I immediately received a wet shirt and trousers. There were many amused faces and a good few laughs as I walked through the tables with a large bunch of flowers accompanied by wet shirt and trousers!! Jo was quite emotional to receive her just reward so it was worth it!

We meet at the car park at the Stardust Night Club on the A50 just before Coalville on the last Wednesday of each month until September which then switches to 11am on the last Sunday of each month during the winter season.

Midlands Monthly Meet, Sunday March 2006 – Charnwood Arms

The 26th of March was the last meeting for the winter programme of The Midlands Classic Car Club at Bardon which we as a club attend. The morning was bright and dry but unfortunately other events were also scheduled for the 26th of March, Mothers Day no doubt was responsible for a low turn out but the National Restoration Show at Stoneleigh was the main reason for only three MK1's being on display. Those attending had a good discussion around the cars all wondering how Jo Walker and Garrick Abrahamson were fairing with their team at Stoneleigh at the Restoration show, it becoming rather cold we all drifted into the Charnwood Arms for a cup of warm coffee and to put the world to rights. Those attending were:-
Isabel Beardmore - White
Domonie Holland and James Cleveley - Blue
Fred and Doris Sanderson - Helios Blue
Bob Cox - unfortunatley Bob's car isn't on the road at the moment.

The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday the 26th April at 7pm. Looking forward to seeing you there.

NEWS - 20th APRIL 2006

Now summer is upon us, the monthly meet has moved to the last Wednesday of every month to allow for the busy show schedule over the summer.

Wednesday 26th April, 7pm:

Castle and Pub Run

We will meet at the usual venue (Charnwood Arms) and then go for a 'fun' drive round the back roads to the 'Castle Hotel' Pub, Kirby Muxloe. This is a lovely pub, which also does great food (perhaps a bit pricey but is definitely not your usual pub-grub). The pub is next door to Kirby Muxloes’ own ruined Castle, so if the weather is not too awful it’s probably worth a quick walk around the moat. We’ll stop at the pub for a drink or two, and then make our own way home there-after.

Midlands Monthly Meet, Sunday 29th January 2006 – Charnwood Arms

The first monthly meet of the year for the midlands area certainly blew away the cobwebs, as we all gathered on a very fresh cold morning. Despite the chill, a great turnout of 9 MK1s made it to the Charnwood Arms: 1 MK1a, 1 MK1sc, and 7 MK1bs.

Garrick Abrahamson – Red MK1a
Tom Dyke – Mica Blue MK1sc
Doris and Fred Sanderson – Helios Blue MK1b
Chris Chambers– Red MK1b
Jo Walker – Orange MK1b
Stuart Kynoch – Red MK1b
Domonie Holland and James Cleveley – Mica Blue MK1b
Isabel Beardmore – White MK1b
Mel Dawson – Red MK1b

Doris gave us a special treat to beat the chill with her hot flask of Glühwein and lovely Stollen cake.

We caught up with what we had tinkered with over the Christmas period: Chris had fitted a manual choke override this MK1b, I had just got my Koni adjustable shocks and lowering springs fitted to my MK1b, and Garricks’ MK1a had been treated to new front wings and front valance. Tom gave us a giggle with his ‘special’ leaky T-bar ‘fix’.

The Midlands Classic Car Club also meets up at the same venue, and saw the arrival of a Green Goddess that had just been bought by one of their members.

After a quick defrosting in the pub, we had a quick browse of the classic cars, followed by a ‘spirited’ drive back home on a crisp day.

As spring sets in and more MK1s emerge from their garage hibernation, I hope more of you can pop along to our winter meet on the last Sunday of each month. Check the MK1 Club website for pub monthly meets in other areas, and the IMOC events page too.
